Case examples vary on a weekly basis. We recently represented a woman in a high asset divorce case where she had little knowledge of her husband's assets. The parties lived on a very modest salary. Through the use of discovery and expert testimony, we were able to prove that the husband's business had substantial value, and were able to obtain a multi-million dollar settlement for this client.
We have also had recent cases where our job was to protect a business owner under attack by a spouse. In one recent case, we have had tremendous success defeating claims asserted by a spouse by showing that the expert forensic accountant's calculations were flawed and based on false assumptions.
Perhaps the most important cases, in my opinion, are those involving parenting time and child custody. While we always encourage our clients to try to work out these issues directly with the other parent, when the circumstances dictate otherwise we are there to protect both the children and the parent's rights.
Also, we are pleased that we can be of assistance now to individuals who entered into a same-sex civil union that need be dissolved. With the granting of new rights to same-sex couples, we are pleased to be able to provide assistance to the gay and lesbian community when such relationships need to be dissolved. I have represented individuals in complex, high asset divorces with businesses and other assets at stake and in dispute, as well as those going through "simple" divorces where most issues are agreed upon at the outset. My focus is to obtain the best possible result for my clients in a cost-effective manner. I am extremely sensitive to the stresses and strains of divorce upon any client and particularly on the children of the relationship. I will do everything possible to minimize that impact while protecting their rights.
I have purposefully chosen to remain a small law firm to allow me to provide individual service to each client. This is what differentiates my firm from many others. Unlike other firms where a client may find him or herself with a strange and perhaps inexperienced associate in court, I will be the attorney standing by your side at all important events during court proceedings.
Originally known and founded as Weiss, Weitzman & Weiss, LLC in Bedminster, New Jersey, in 2000, we expanded to the Bridgewater location in 2005. I have continued the firm's family law practice under the Law Offices of Leonard Weitzman, LLC, after those partners chose to pursue careers in other areas of the law.
I have been continuously self-employed as an attorney at law in New Jersey since 1983.
AV-Rated by Martindale-Hubbell; Certified as a Civil Trial Attorney by the Supreme Court of New Jersey.
I believe knowledge is power and I welcome a client who educates himself or herself on legal issues. However, it is important to question how the client is educating himself or herself because often the information that person has may not be accurate. For instance, a friend at work giving "advice" may have good intentions, but may be inadvertently steering a client in the wrong direction. Also family law differs from state to state, so simply reading an article about property distribution in California does that person little good in New Jersey. That being said, there is plenty of "good" information on legal issues and I am happy to respond to questions or concerns of a client. When a client understands the law and his or her exposure in a family law proceeding, it makes my job easier.
My willingness to review client-prepared documents depends on what documents are being reviewed and the complexity of the matter for the particular client.
I am not willing to coach clients. In theory a person could find a coach to tell them how to drill a cavity in their tooth instead of paying a dentist with years of experience to do it correctly. Family law, property distribution, alimony and support are complex legal issues in New Jersey with many nuances and pitfalls that could be very dangerous. I will not stand on the sidelines "coaching" while a client exposes himself or herself to legal harm. I believe it is my job to be at the lead protecting my client, and not in the background watching and hoping that things work out.
I am a third generation New Jersey attorney. I have been exposed to the law since my early childhood. I excelled in public speaking and writing courses in school. As I matured, I realized that my verbal and written communication skills were my best assets and could best be applied in the legal arena. Ultimately, I accepted the fact that I was likely destined for this career and that my mother probably knew it when she gave me the initials L.A.W.
My work experience as a litigator makes me a better family law lawyer today. The early part of my career was spent litigating complex cases in state and federal courts. I tried many cases before a judge and jury. I was appointed lead counsel in both state and federal class action matters. I was recognized as a Certified Civil Trial Attorney by the New Jersey Supreme Court in 1993, and re-certified in 2001 and 2008. Of approximately 70,000 lawyers in New Jersey, only about 1,300 have this recognition. My career shifted towards a family law practice that has spanned over 25 years, and I bring this experience into my practice today. This experience as a trial lawyer differentiates me from most other lawyers who currently practice family law. I am fully competent in a courtroom. Both my adversaries and my clients know that if necessary, I am comfortable litigating and trying their cases. This allows me to actually settle more cases on favorable terms for my clients.
My practice has shifted from a litigation based practice to a family law based practice. This is due to many factors, including my personal desire to be interacting with individuals with real problems on a local level virtually every day.
I enjoy solving problems for people on a daily basis.
I have dedicated staff members that have been with my practice for years. My primary legal assistant started working for me when she was 16. That was about 23 years ago. My staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Telephone calls are always returned and I pride myself on being accessible to my clients.
My ability to communicate in a strong and effective manner is a great strength of mine. I am friendly and respectful to my adversaries, but I will do everything legally possible to protect my clients. If a fair settlement can be achieved, I will encourage it. However, if I feel my client is not being treated properly, then I will take all necessary action to litigate the case and aggressively represent the interests of my client.
I enjoy exercise and working out. I also enjoy reading and watching current events. I watch and enjoy sports.
