Firm Focus and History

The firm was established in 1992.

I have specialized in bankruptcy law since 1975. I was a bankruptcy court Chapter 7 trustee from 1975 to 1989. I focus only on Chapter 7, 11, and 13 bankruptcies and corporate reorganizations for individuals and businesses. I limit my practice to these branches of the law without being a "jack of all trades" in many areas. This allows me to concentrate my continuing education, seminars, and experience on bankruptcy law to provide my clients with specific and knowledgeable advice.

Previous Employment Summary

I have been in small firms specializing in bankruptcy since 1975 and with my current firm for over 16 years.

Activities and Awards

Chair, Bankruptcy Committee, American Bar Association, General Practice Division from 2001 to the present 2008; Vice-Chair from 1998-2001. I am AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell; named "Best Lawyer" in bankruptcy by Naithe-Smith, "Best Lawyer's in America." Prior Chair of Washington State Bar Association, Debtor/Creditor Section; prior Chair of King County Bar Bankruptcy Section.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I have a full free package of information for any individual considering bankruptcy which explains the process, procedures, costs, and information. I provide all interested clients with this package.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am willing to review documents prepared by clients.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Bankruptcy is too complicated and intricate to do by oneself, and I won't coach anyone to do it without an attorney.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

Originally, I was attracted to law in an academic way for complexity and stimulation, but I found it to be much more interesting than I thought it would be. It is fascinating and intellectually challenging.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Being a bankruptcy court trustee for 14 years has made my work as a bankruptcy attorney much more valuable to my clients since I know the process. I also know the current trustees and judges personally. One of the Seattle bankruptcy judges is, in fact, my uncle. I know what is required by the court, the trustees, and creditors to successfully ensure that the case goes smoothly for my clients.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I went into practice with Samuel Steiner, my uncle, who was a bankruptcy practitioner in Seattle. Several years later, he was appointed as a federal bankruptcy judge, and still practices in Seattle to this day. I took over his bankruptcy practice in 1978, and have worked in this area of law ever since.

What do you like best about your career?

Being in a small firm, I get to set my own hours, and take the cases I want. I like that freedom, and clients get the benefit of one-on-one with me, rather than working with associates and paralegals that know little about the client.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am in a small firm, so all my clients deal directly with me or my paralegal on all matters. I meet with the clients, work on the papers and forms, and attend all court hearings and meetings with clients myself, rather than delegate that to associates. My paralegal has been with me for over five years, and is very helpful and knowledgeable to assist clients.

What are your strengths and style?

I am no nonsense and I get the job done.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy reading, computers, and travel.

Office Hours

Monday through Friday
9:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Emergency After Hours

No

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

No. Estimate that a consumer bankruptcy runs about $1,200 and can be more or less depending on the nature of the case. If the case is simple, it may cost less, if complicated, it may cost more. I discuss all fees upfront with client, so there are no surprises.

Hourly Rates

$350 for complex Chapter 11 reorganization matters; $300 for general bankruptcy matters.

Free Initial Consultation?

Yes, we offer a free initial consultation.

Typical Retainer

We do not have typical retainers. Our estimated attorney fees for Chapter 7 is generally $1,200 and $1,800 for Chapter 13, but each case is different and I will not do these on a flat fee without full information regarding the case, the creditors, pending foreclosures, and estimated work to be done.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
