Papers and Publications

With the dramatic bankruptcy reform of 2005, which overhauled the bankruptcy laws, four other attorneys and I wrote The Practice Guide for Consumer Bankruptcy Practitioners, which is used as a desk reference in their daily practices.

I am also a consistent contributor to a consumer bankruptcy newsletter in Los Angeles. In addition, I published an article for the California Bankruptcy Journal entitled "Chapter 13 for the Non-Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Attorneys" published by the California Bankruptcy Forum.

Example Cases

While I have numerous cases that I can use as examples, truly, cases I'm most proud of are the ones where my clients have become my friends and where I have made a significant impact in clients' lives.

Firm Focus and History

After passing the bar in 1978, I immediately went into practice concentrating mainly on consumer issues. During this two-year period, I represented clients in various practice areas, which included family law, personal injury, small business, real estate and criminal law. Through this experience, I was able to build a firm foundation and interest in other areas of practice that relate to consumers' experiences. From this I found that the area of bankruptcy provided my clients with the most benefits available to them under the law. It is from this initial consumer exposure that I have been able to establish a firm that is solely dedicated to consumer bankruptcy.

King & Associates' mission is to provide high quality bankruptcy services and to grow with and anticipate the needs of existing and potential clients we serve throughout Southern California. We strive to serve our clients in a manner that is consistent with the highest standards of excellence and integrity.

We have extensive bankruptcy negotiation experience and have handled hundreds of cases. Our primary focus is on a combination of Chapter 7 and 13 filings, with some Chapter 11 filings for consumer clients who do not qualify for Chapter 13 relief.

Previous Employment Summary

Prior to becoming a lawyer, I worked for the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Social Services for eight years as a case worker and supervisor. During this time, I raised a family and put myself through law school. Constant contact with people through my employment with DPSS, along with a variety of jobs I held in the past, including my paper route as a young boy, was the most rewarding experience of all. I knew that no matter what career I chose, it had to be where I could help or be of assistance to others.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

One of the main principles of my practice is being able to educate my clients and help them feel comfortable with the decision they are making. I believe that once clients understand what bankruptcy can and cannot do for them, my guidance assists them in making a fully informed decision. I spend as much time as necessary with my clients giving them my knowledge and education on bankruptcy law, as well as educating myself on my client's desires and needs.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am more than happy to look at the documents they have prepared and provide my professional guidance.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I have represented and am more than willing to represent clients who have filed their own bankruptcy and find themselves in over their head. It is not uncommon for clients to find themselves in this position, especially with the bankruptcy reform of 2005. Seeking advice from an attorney with the expertise that I have is sure to help overcome confusion and frustration during this difficult period.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I decided to become a lawyer because even as a young boy with a paper route, I was in contact with people and I truly enjoyed that interaction. I knew that no matter what career I chose, it had to be one where I would be in constant contact with people and could help or be of assistance to them. Becoming an attorney seemed the most logical decision.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

The experiences I gain from my daily dealings with people and with life in general help me be a better lawyer, even with something as simple as reading the daily newspaper.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

During my initial practice as an attorney, I represented clients in a variety of practice areas, which included family law, personal injury, small business, real estate and criminal law. Through this experience, I was able to build a firm foundation and interest in other areas of practice that relate to consumers' experiences. From this I found that the area of bankruptcy provided my clients with the most benefits available to them under the law. It is from this initial consumer exposure that led me to establish a firm solely dedicated to consumer bankruptcy.

What do you like best about your career?

Being able to provide my clients with relief from financial burdens and a fresh start provides a great sense of fulfillment.

Tell us about your law firm:

I hire experienced and caring staff members, who have the same values and desire to help clients that I do. I am pleased that over the last thirty years, I have had extremely low turn-over of staff. In addition, many of my staff members are administrators in the professional groups to which I belong.

What are your strengths and style?

I am very caring and hands-on with all of my clients. I provide direct and effective guidance. I pride myself on continually educating myself and becoming a better person and lawyer.

I also pride myself on my ability to build long lasting, strong relationships. In fact, over the past 30 years, I have developed relationships with other attorneys, opposing counsel, trustees, court clerks and judges. This provides me with industry connections that are invaluable.

Because I build relationships with clients, they often refer their friends and family to me for the same expertise and help resolving their problems.

Personal Interests:

My first and foremost interest is the time I spend with my family and friends, whether it be wine tasting with my wife and daughters, watching a movie my son worked on as an award-winning sound editor, or spending time with my three grandchildren or friends on the golf course. Each year, a big highlight is hosting our annual St. Patrick's Day party where I cook 100 pounds of corned beef. I am dedicated to making the most out of life as well as serving my clients.
