Firm Focus and History

The law firm that would become Luftman, Heck & Associates, LLP was formed in December 2003 by Jeremiah E. Heck and I. Recent graduates of Capital University Law School in Columbus, OH, we decided to take the bold step of starting our own law firm. Through meticulous preparation and an intense desire to distinguish ourselves from others in the field of law, we began our legal careers.

Over the past five years, the law firm has expanded significantly both in the scope of legal services provided as well as in size. Besides Mr. Heck and myself, associate attorneys Bryan C. Barch, David B. Schulz, Scott C. Florin, and Scott M. Grace currently are employed by the law firm, as well as over thirty paralegal and staff members. In addition, there are plans to hire more attorneys and professional staff members at the law firm.

Luftman, Heck & Associates is a full-service law firm. We provide representation in the areas of criminal defense, traffic violations, particularly DUI/OVI, bankruptcy, personal injury, consumer law, estate planning, contracts real estate and family law.

Previous Employment Summary

During law school, I was a clerk at the Franklin County Public Defenders Office and did catering as well.

Activities and Awards

I am C/V-Rated by Martindale-Hubbell.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I am happy when my clients educate themselves. It is one of my core philosophies to educate clients about their situations. I would never want my clients to resolve a case where they did not fully understand the issues or ramifications.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I encourage my clients to prepare their own version of the events that led to their charges and review them prior to speaking with the prosecutor.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am not willing to coach clients.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I decided to become a lawyer because speaking came naturally to me. I wanted to be either a lawyer or professor, and chose the former.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I think my experience as a clerk for the Franklin County Public Defender's office has made me a better attorney. I was able to gain a great amount of exposure to Franklin County Municipal Court through that experience.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

My clerkship concentrated on criminal defense and traffic law. I knew these areas best, and decided to stick to my strengths for the focus of my law firm.

What do you like best about your career?

I genuinely enjoy the interaction with the court staff, including judges, bailiffs and prosecutors on a daily basis. I also like that I have the opportunity to conduct jury trials, which are a great intellectual challenge.

Tell us about your law firm:

Though I have a practice that includes four associate attorneys and 30+ paralegals and staff, generally only my personal secretary has any interaction with my clients on a daily basis. My secretary has a wealth of knowledge and shares my "get it done yesterday" attitude in regard to my clients' needs.

What are your strengths and style?

My strengths are my professionalism, dedication, attention to detail, and genuine concern for my clients' situations, in addition to my overall communication and advocacy skills. My style is thorough and fair. I keep my clients informed and am unafraid to litigate a case.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy working out, playing sports of all kinds, traveling when the opportunity presents itself, and volunteering through Big Brothers Big Sisters and Ohio Special Olympics.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
