Bar Admissions

Bar Number: 110995

Specialty Certifications

Certified specialist in criminal law since 1991.

Other Court Admissions

All the state courts in California, and the United States Supreme Court.

Association Memberships

California State Bar Association, Alameda County Bar Association, Women Defenders.

Continuing Education

I have taught for Continuing Legal Education of the Bar in recent criminal law developments. I generally take more hours of continuing legal education classes than are needed. There is an annual death penalty seminar in Monterey that I try to attend.

Example Cases

I am proud to have saved the life of a young man named Demarcus Ralls. He was the first young man to be tried of the Nut Case Gang. Despite the multiple murder charges, and the multiple robberies, etc., the jury voted for a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, instead of death. Because of this verdict, the D.A. then dropped their request for death on two of the other defendants.

Firm Focus and History

After being a JAG officer in the United States Navy, and a Solano County Public Defender, I went out to open my own defense practice in 1990.

I have a lot of experience with serious, violent felony cases. I do criminal defense work exclusively.

Previous Employment Summary

As stated above, I was a government lawyer for my first years as an attorney. Although the military claims that they train their lawyers in all areas of military practice, I did defense work almost exclusively during my time as a Navy JAG Officer. I did my first trials in uniform. I did 27 misdemeanor trials my first year as a Public Defender. The office gave me the "Go to Trial," award. When the county fired my boss, I quit in protest. Since then, I have tried many cases to verdict. I have handled quite a few high publicity cases.

Activities and Awards

I am peer-review rated by Martindale-Hubble.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

It concerns me because the context and the history of a particular legal issue can alter what appears to be a simple answer.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am happy to review any documents my client prepares.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

This depends upon the seriousness of the matter. The more serious, the more an attorney is needed.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I enjoy helping people. I have strong beliefs about what justice means.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have had extensive trial experience. I have a good reputation with the Office of District Attorney of Alameda County. I am known as a fighter. My involvement with civil rights and women's rights has made me a strong advocate.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

You had to take criminal law as a first year law student. I knew those charged with crimes were the people who needed a lawyer's help the most.

What do you like best about your career?

I do enjoy the trial work, but fighting and getting a good resolution to a case can be very satisfying and so important for my client.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner. I have a great network of private investigators, doctors, and experts who I rely upon (handwriting experts, ballistics experts, DNA, psychologists, etc.)

What are your strengths and style?

I am a good public speaker. My style is to be sincere and believe what I say. I think jurors distrust defense attorneys, in general. If I want to persuade them, they have to believe what I say to them.

Personal Interests:

I like spending time at home with my boyfriend and our crazy dog. I love old movies.
