Continuing Education

I have attended various seminars and read various publications in the area of criminal law. For example, I attended the Advanced DUI Trial Advocacy School at the State Attorney's Office. I always exceed the Florida Bar required education hours.

Example Cases

During my very first case in private practice, I represented a juvenile who was facing the potential of life in prison after he and two other individuals participated in an armed robbery. I was able to negotiate a sentence for my client, who had the main role, which consisted of eight months in a juvenile program. The co-defendants were direct filed and went on to face potential life sentences in Florida State Prison.

Since that time, I have continued to achieve positive results which have included everything from outright dismissals to very favorable terms that avoid jail time and minimize other adverse consequences such as the loss of driving privileges.

Firm Focus and History

The Garvin Law Firm was formed in 2008 when my father and I decided to go into practice together. At that time, were able to combine the experience of a former prosecutor with a 35 year civil litigator.

The Garvin Law Firm is a father and son legal team that combines over 35 years of successful legal representation with a contemporary passion and drive to provide the best legal advocacy available.

Whether we are representing a criminal defendant or someone with a serious injury, our firm passionately represents our client's interests and stands up against those with power, the large insurance companies, corporations, and both the state and federal governments.

The Garvin Law Firm is dedicated to providing personal attention to each and every one of our clients while maintaining the highest level of legal representation.

Previous Employment Summary

• Assistant State Attorney for the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit, in and for Broward County Florida
• Cohen & Cohen P.A. law clerk

Activities and Awards

Garvin Law Firm is a Martindale-Hubbell AV-rated law firm. The Garvin Law Firm is also featured in the Best Lawyers in America.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Education is never a bad thing. I have worked with many clients who have provided me with valuable information which helped obtain a desirable outcome in their case. I have also worked with others who have done their own research on issues that did not apply and I had to spend hours explaining why the information they found does not apply. The idea here is that we work as a team. When this is possible, it makes dealing with the legal process easier and less stressful for both the client and me.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I will be glad to review a document for a client. My main practice area is criminal law, so I'll be happy to refer the client to a lawyer who is an expert in the applicable area of law.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Nine times out of ten, it is a bad idea to represent oneself. That said, I have helped many clients get started and I've answered questions when clients are unable to afford a private attorney.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I grew up working in my father's law office during the summers, attending legal conferences during family vacations and watching my father during trials. When it was time to decide on a career, I realized that I had a wonderful source of information and a bit of legal experience, but more importantly, a desire to help people. I also enjoy performing in front of an audience.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Aside from growing up in and around a law firm, my experience as a Certified Legal Intern and then Prosecutor was an incredible crash course in criminal law and trial practice. I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning, but only left the State when I felt that I could offer my future clients the best legal representation possible.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I enjoy the practice of criminal law because there is a lot of action and never a dull moment. Additionally, my experience as a prosecutor allowed me to realize that many individuals are unfairly incarcerated as a result of being caught up in "The System."

What do you like best about your career?

I like the ability to be my own boss while I am helping someone through a difficult time in his or her life.

Tell us about your law firm:

My father and I work closely on many cases and we are assisted by a staff of three legal assistants who bring many years of experience to the table.

What are your strengths and style?

I am a nice person and feel that this comes across while dealing with clients, cross-examining a witness on the stand, making a closing argument to the jury, or dealing with a difficult judge.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy fishing and snow skiing.

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
