I attend legal seminars in both California and Utah as well as bankruptcy forums. I always exceed the amount of hours required.
One of the most satisfying cases was where a husband was hiding assets, including vehicles, on Barstow desert compound. We followed on dirt bikes with night vision goggles to find and photograph. After he was asked "do you own any vehicles" he stated emphatically "no," in open court, under penalty of perjury. He was then shown the pictures. The case was settled immediately thereafter.
One of the most frustrating cases was a jury trial against a hospital for medical negligence. A 30 year old machinist had his foot unnecessarily amputated because resident doctors damaged the femoral artery trying to insert a needle. The first trial was declared a mistrial because of an article in the local newspaper that mysteriously came out criticizing the hospital. The second trial resulted in a defense verdict. It is always satisfying to stop over zealous collection agencies that harass poor consumers.

Our firm is ever evolving. At this time we are engaged in both creditor collections and consumer Chapter 7 bankruptcies, in addition to bankruptcies, creditor motion's for relief from stay. We also handle landlord-tenant issues (mostly evictions for residential landlords) and real estate law.
I established the partnership in Carpinteria, California in June, 1999. At the time we were doing mainly creditor bankruptcy and eviction cases for several large mortgage companies and consumer bankruptcies.
For 15 years priors to June of 1999 I had my own practice in Riverside, CA emphasizing consumer/creditor bankruptcy law, evictions, collections, personal injury and real estate law.

As long as clients use a common sense approach to educating themselves on the actual law and not what television says the law is, then I see no problem with clients educating themselves.
In the context of bankruptcy it is very difficult to review documents prepared by clients as the law requires independent verification of certain facts regarding assets and debts. It is more appropriate with landlord-tenant and family law issues.
Again, the new bankruptcy laws basically prohibit this approach (coach clients who want to represent themselves). There are too many "traps for the unwary" and the law is even difficult for attorneys to abide by.
Coaching a client may be o.k. in small claims, landlord-tenant or family law cases.
I am a people person. I wanted to help the folks who get up and go to work everyday. They seemed like the ones who truly needed an attorney. The poor get legal aid, the rich have big law firms on retainer. But what does the person in the middle get? We have, for over 25 years, represented the working person by keeping our overhead and office costs to a minimum so that they can afford quality legal representation.
I worked my way through college and law school by unloading trucks for allied van lines and waxing cars. I have been married for 30 years and have raised 5 boys. I have been active in boy scouts, little league and my church. All of these experiences make me a better lawyer.
Bankruptcy, evictions, collections and family law issues are very traumatic times for people. I find satisfaction in helping them get through their legal problems as economically as possible.
Helping others through traumatic legal situations both economically and competently is very satisfying.
I am basically a solo practitioner so all of my clients deal directly with me. I have a wonderful legal assistant who is attentive to all my clients' immediate needs. She has a wealth of knowledge and is sensitive to the needs of my clients.
All phone calls are returned within 48 hours.
I respond immediately and personally to my clients' legal needs. I use a courteous common sense approach in dealing with the courts and other attorneys. I interact with honesty and integrity. I like to get tasks done as soon as possible. I don't procrastinate.
I enjoy golf, scuba-diving, tennis, traveling, scouting, participating in my church and doing community service.
