Criminal Defense
I specialize in Criminal Law and have 20 years experience defending people that have been accused of felonies and misdemeanors. I have extensive trial experience including high profile capitol offense cases and 3 strikes cases. I have had excellent results defending criminal allegations of all kinds including DUI's, drug related charges, sex offenses, murder, burglary, robbery and grand theft. I defend clients primarily in Placer County and Sacramento County including Auburn, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, Folsom, Antelope, Sacramento and surrounding areas. I have also defended clients in other Northern California communities such as Yuba City, Marysville and Nevada City.

I teach continuing education seminars on criminal law, and I attend legal education seminars across the state covering subjects relevant to criminal law, including the annual death penalty conference.
I have created or collaborated on the following publications: CrimeTime Software, California Crimes and Enhancements Listings, and Federal Drug Sentencing Calculator.
Over the past twenty-one years I have handled literally thousands of criminal cases. I have gone to trial on several high-profile capital cases that resulted in not-guilty verdicts. On one occasion, I defended a twenty-two year old woman charged with special circumstance murder. The prosecutor was seeking the death penalty. The young lady was eventually found not guilty of all murder charges.

I began my private practice in 2006 after practicing criminal law as a public defender in Placer County since 1987.
Prior to starting a private practice in 2006, I worked as a public defender in Placer County. In 1996, my partner, Len Tauman, and I were awarded the contract to provide public defender services to Placer County. Fulfilling this contract required me to employ approximately 24 attorneys, 8 investigators, and a support staff.
I created the CrimeTime Software that is used statewide to calculate criminal sentences. I have trained several thousand criminal practitioners (judges, prosecutors, defense attorney, probation officers, state attorneys, legislators, etc) on how the intricacies of California's complex sentencing law work.
I am an approved provider of continuing education for bar-related education.
I believe that the more clients know about the law, the better they will be equipped to make decisions and to assist our team in their defense.
I am willing to review documents prepared by clients. However, I have created an extensive library of motions and other documents that are needed to effectively defend my clients.
I discourage the idea of coaching clients who want to represent themselves.
I enjoy working with people and I find the work very interesting. Helping people achieve the best possible outcome is very rewarding.
My experience as a public defender and my experience running a public defender's office gave me enormous experience handling this line of work.
My experience as a public defender and my experience running a public defender's office gave me enormous experience that I draw upon as a lawyer.
I find criminal law very interesting and I love the challenge being a lawyer presents.
I enjoy feeling that, because of my legal work, some injustice was avoided.
I work with a fantastic support group. My investigator is the best I have ever worked with, and I have had several. I have a small team of people that are extremely good at what they do.
My primary strength is that I have a solid understanding of criminal defense in California. Because of my background creating the CrimeTime sentence calculation product, I have a unique ability to recognize opportunities and to reach mutually beneficial settlement agreements if the client requests that I do so. I also believe I have a reputation for being a hard-fighting litigator, as I am a very experienced trial attorney.
I enjoy spending time with my family. My current hobby is photography. I also like sports and traveling.
