Continuing Education

I taught a seminar on unbundled legal services at Seattle University School of Law. I attend many continuing legal education classes each year on a variety of topics, but focus generally on family law. I often exceed the number of seminars required to satisfy Washington's state bar requirements.

Example Cases

We routinely represent clients from a variety of backgrounds. Two of my favorite cases were representing fathers in trial with regards to primary residential parent requests for their children. In both cases the guardian ad litem/parenting evaluator recommended that the children reside with the mother. I prevailed at trial on both cases. It was very satisfying because I honestly felt the evaluator had not done his job thoroughly.

Another favorite case of mine involved representing a woman in a long term marriage (30 years plus). I had to negotiate a higher level of spousal maintenance and, later, defend her against the former husband's request to lower the spousal maintenance amount. We won and she was able to keep her maintenance amount.

Firm Focus and History

Our firm focuses all of our attention, experience, and knowledge in the area of family law. We understand the unique issues and emotions involved with these cases and offer our support by providing personal attention and exceptional service, along with experienced legal advocacy, to our clients. Our attorneys and legal assistants interact with and establish close working relationships with our clients to help guide them through the process and achieve a resolution in their best interest.

I practiced family law as a sole practitioner until 2004. In 2004 I incorporated and added two associate attorneys and additional paralegals to my staff in order to better meet my clients' needs.

Previous Employment Summary

I was originally a legal secretary who went back to school to become a paralegal. Before going to law school, and while going through a divorce (17 years of marriage) and raising three daughters, I worked in several law offices.

Activities and Awards

Certificate of Appreciation from King County Superior Court, 1998 to 2005.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

In this day and age it is critical to be educated not only on the law, but on how the legal process actually works. Unfortunately, some people rely on friends or the internet to gather information that is not always accurate. I recommend having an experienced family law attorney inform clients as to their rights and obligations.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I have been reviewing documents prepared by clients for some time. I enjoy helping people draft documents that will be enforceable. I have seen too many situations where a party did not get legal advice and found themselves embroiled in expensive litigation years later.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves. I generally give written instructions for clients to follow, since the court system can be quite complicated to maneuver in.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

Becoming a lawyer was a progressive choice for me. The longer I worked in law offices as a legal secretary/paralegal, the less I liked what I saw, and the more I wanted to learn about the law. Too many offices focused on their family law cases from merely a "business" standpoint. I feel that it is not just about achieving the best result you can for a client; it is caring about what actually happens to that person, before and after the lawsuit. Representing clients in family law situations are not only a matter of experience and effective representation to me, but a matter of the heart as well.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

As stated above, along with my secretarial/paralegal background, I have a total of over 30 years experience within family law. I am also a divorce survivor and parent.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I have always enjoyed the complexity of family law, as well as working directly with clients who are experiencing one of the most difficult times in their lives.

What do you like best about your career?

I am thorough in what I do and am able to help people effectively. This gives me a great sense of satisfaction.

Tell us about your law firm:

We have a wonderfully supportive and caring office with years of experience. It is important to all of us to let our clients know that we are 100% behind them. It is not unusual for us to receive flowers and other gifts at the conclusion of our representation as tokens of appreciation for the service we provide.

What are your strengths and style?

I am very thorough. I enjoy sifting through evidence, and being able to sustain my client's position through good old fashioned hard work. I am ethical, honest and trustworthy.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I also enjoy sitting on the beach while reading a good book!
