I do not feel comfortable discussing my client's cases even in the abstract. The client whose case I highlight will recognize himself or herself in print and may feel I have violated his or her confidences. I will not put any client in a position where they may feel uncomfortable.

Lee Ann Roads and I worked together at the Pima County Attorney's Office for twelve years. She has prosecuted over 100 felony cases and was the supervisor of the Property Crimes Unit for many years. Lee was a prosecutor for more than 20 years and I was a prosecutor for 12 years. We had each decided separately that we wanted to enter private practice and doing so together was an obvious plan.
Kulseth & Roads is a client focused law firm. Both Lee Ann Roads and I personally review and participate in the preparation of every client's case. Both of us are available to answer client questions. We strive to give our clients the tools to understanding the legal process in which they are involved and to guide them through it. We carefully review and analyze every case and explain the legal and "real world" implications of all relevant issues. We are always there to support our clients.
I was a Deputy County Attorney for Pima County from 1993 to 2004. I supervised the Pima County Grand Jury Unit, the Felony Charging Unit, and the Adult Diversion Unit from 1999-2004. Prior to becoming a supervisor, I prosecuted felony Domestic Violence, Narcotic, DUI, Gang and Homicide cases.
1. Spearheaded development of coordinated multi-agency response to and investigation of animal cruelty cases.
2. Provided animal cruelty training for law enforcement and animal control agencies.
3. Researched and wrote briefs as a special attorney assistant to the Appellate Unit.
4. Redesigned evaluation procedures for all attorneys.
5. Developed presentations for and lectured at the bi-annual Community Prosecutor's Academy.
6. Coordinated with the Misdemeanor Supervisor to develop a classification system to identify targeted offenders.
During my initial consultation with the client, I focus the discussion on client education. Knowledge is empowering. When facing a difficult personal issue, knowing your rights and risks is key to making intelligent and informed decisions about your case.
My ability to do this depends on my work load at the time I am presented with the question. I am generally willing to review documents.
I am not willing to do this because of the potential ethical issues involved.
I wish I could answer nobly and say "to help people," but, honestly, I stumbled into the profession. My undergrad degree is in Biochemistry; I thought I was heading into that general field. Unfortunately, during my "year off" between college and the rest of my life, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I elected to remain in Tucson to lend my support. I did not want to go to medical school, so I chose law school to "keep busy" always assuming I would switch back to science, but it never happened.
My professional and personal experiences have given me the ability to handle a client's intense emotions that often accompany a family law proceeding. Lee and I strive to help our clients manage the emotional complexities of a legal proceeding that affects the core of his or her LIFE in order to assist them in making rational, common sense decisions during a difficult time.
When I left the Pima County Attorney's Office, I was hesitant about doing criminal defense work, which seemed like the most obvious choice. I felt saturated in the ‘criminal experience' and wanted to try something completely different. I was drawn to family law more than any other field.
I like working at a firm where independent and creative thinking is not only encouraged, it's expected.
With the exception of our receptionist, Judy Scott, every person at the firm is a former employee of the Pima County Attorney's Office. Judy, however, is the heart of the office and is generally the first person with whom our clients interact. She is witty, understanding and compassionate. Our legal assistants are experienced and dedicated to assisting our clients through the legal process. Mary E. Smith is the office manager and pretty much what she says goes.
Unlike my partner Lee, who is generally referred to as "the warm fuzzy one," I tend to be more direct. I am a Type A+. I want things done right and I want them done immediately.
I am the president and co-founder of Saving Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE). Please visit www.safeanimals.com for more information. I am the co-founder and producer of the Arizona Animal Fair. Please go to www.azanimalfair.com for more information.
