Firm Focus and History

Alan Powell, PA has been serving diverse clients in the Tampa Bay area since June of 1995.

We focus on bankruptcy 90% of the time, and probate, trusts and estates 10% of the time.

Previous Employment Summary

I've been in private practice since my admission to the bar.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

My suggestion is that clients should consult an attorney immediately since the environment in this area of law is extremely difficult for a layperson.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

We provide our clients with the official federal forms in bankruptcy cases. We do not use checklists or worksheets, which we consider to be a waste of time.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

It is a severe error in judgment for a non-lawyer or anyone to represent his or herself in a federal proceeding.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

The structure of society in the United States today and the mechanisms for obtaining effective outcomes therein militate conversancy with its highly technical rules.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

It is important to be thoroughly conversant in the statutes and rulings that constitute our laws, but it is also important to remember that the neutrality of the law is a myth and that opposite outcomes can be successfully argued from the same set of statues and decisions.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

The Middle District of Florida is the third largest bankruptcy filing center in the United States after the divisions represented by Los Angeles and Chicago. Thus, it probably has the highest density of bankruptcy filings in the entire United States.

What do you like best about your career?

Legal literacy enables me to make more informed decisions in interacting with fellow citizens and the authority of the State.

Tell us about your law firm:

I have always worked alone; my clients prefer it this way and they know that when they call my office, they will speak to me and me alone. This saves them valuable time and provides them with more immediate satisfaction in addressing their concerns.

What are your strengths and style?

My clients know that I am forthright and direct in my communications with them. They expect definitive answers and realistic projections of their outcomes. I do not believe that encouraging wishful thinking is constructive in the bankruptcy or probate framework.

Personal Interests:

I am interested in politics as well as classical and biblical languages and literatures. I am also interested in American history.
