I worked for three law firms prior to my political appointment and solo practice. I have also done (and continue to do) "ghost writing" and consulting for other law firms.

The more educated the client, the better the attorney-client relationship. Clients who understand the choices they have can make truly informed decisions. They can provide key information about their transaction or invention to assist in crafting well written legal documents. Our goal is to educate clients along the way, explaining options and things to consider when making decisions. For years, we have made our firm library (which includes Nolo books) available to clients to do some "self-education" on issues. We have also devoted significant efforts to providing useful information on our website and regularly offering courses in these specialized legal areas.
For example, click here to educate yourself on Trademark issues.
For information on protecting technology via company policy and provisional patent applications, click here.
This is a regular part of our practice. We point out additional provisions they may consider adding or the unintended consequences of some provisions that have been included in a given document. We also try to educate clients on the role of state law and how practice/laws vary between jurisdictions. We try to explain terminology, especially when they have "cut and paste" from a variety of sources.
This is a regular part of our practice. For clients who have the time to spend educating themselves, this is often a great way to contain their budget for legal services.
However, when it comes to patents, consider the advice on this page:

I like the energy and excitement of working with inventors and entrepreneurs. My job is rarely boring. I am introduced to new ideas and technology, not to mention new personalities, on a daily basis. I get to work with people and be intellectually challenged. What could be better?
I was a general practitioner and litigation associate prior to specializing in intellectual property law. This allows me to offer a few extra services to clients that meet their needs in the early stages. Inventors appreciate that we can form a new business or draft agreements to exploit their intellectual property without having to go to another law firm. Having worked with small businesses, I have a better feel for the challenges, budgets and objectives of business owners and can provide appropriate guidance.
On the technical side, I was formerly an appointed government official responsible for a municipal electric company, a sewer plant and municipal construction projects. I was also a certified building code inspector. My science background is in chemistry, so working with engineers and overseeing technical projects has given me a broad background that enables me to understand new and different technologies of my clients.
Many years of my career were spent working with people who were suing or being sued. Intellectual property is quite different. Clients have something positive happening. They enjoy working with their lawyer, learning about the law and how it can benefit them. I get to spend much of my time teaching and guiding the decision making process in a positive environment.
My job is somewhat of a dream weaver. I get to help people take that first step toward fulfilling a dream or creating a nest egg for financial independence. Although all attorneys occasionally help clients that have legal trouble, I prefer to focus my talent on helping happy, creative, and energetic inventors and entrepreneurs in a focused approach to controlling legal costs with preventative, cost-effective protection. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I get to be a part of a team, learn about new businesses and technologies and be in the front row watching the journey of hard work and success.
I am a solo practitioner, so all of my clients deal directly with me. I do have a team of paraprofessionals (patent agents, scientists/engineers, patent drawing engineers, and paralegals) who assist on cases when necessary. My staff is attentive to all of my clients' immediate needs and tries to assist in returning calls or helping clients when I am in meetings. My staff members have a wealth of knowledge and are sensitive to the needs of my clients, especially in terms of confidentiality.
My style is to be more like the person next door than a traditional, formal attorney approach. We pull up our sleeves and "get dirty" with our clients. I find that when my clients are relaxed about talking with me as an attorney, the flow of information is greater. This allows me to get a better feel for the needs and goals of the client, and craft solutions that meet those needs. The result can be a greater breadth of protection for a client's idea.
I make an effort to understand my clients' business objectives and present options and alternatives for protecting the clients' ideas and business assets. I don't make the decision for the client; rather I strive to educate the client so he or she can decide best how to proceed. I enjoy being a part of a team and try to offer service that helps clients reach their goals.
I enjoy gourmet cooking and wine.
