One divorce matter involved a person in the United States on a work visa whose spouse lived in a foreign country. The most significant challenge was getting personal service on the spouse. This was accomplished by contracting with a law firm in his country and having them serve him and provide the proof of service.
Another matter involved a client who was about to lose his home for non-payment of taxes. We arranged a mortgage on the property which allowed him to pay the delinquent taxes; assisted him in interviewing and choosing investment specialists to invest the remaining funds and provide him with a monthly stipend for his expenses and mortgage, tax and insurance payments until he can qualify for a reverse mortgage or other financial vehicle when he reaches the appropriate age. We also prepared his will, financial power of attorney and health directive and providing continuing assistance to him as needed.

The firm was established November of 2004 and the first case was an environmental case involving termite infestation and treatment issues. Since then, we have handled contested and uncontested divorces, developed wills, financial powers of attorney and health care directives and become counsel for a small business.
The focus of Calloway LLC Legal Services is to provide the best legal representation at reasonable cost.
Prior to opening my own firm, I worked in government, at the federal, state and local levels in both legal and policy positions and staff and supervisory roles. Some of my accomplishments follow:
• Developed programs, policies and methods of implementing policy, established and provided leadership and management to new offices and participated in program development;
• Served as lead attorney in numerous complex investigations of recipients of federal funds and natural gas pipelines and producers, and in administrative proceedings regarding alleged violations of federal statutes, rules and regulations;
• Directed government agency and program operational reviews and made recommendations for improvement, as well as whether they might be privatized, eliminated or modified;
• Provided leadership for settlements and administrative litigation and served as a resource person to attorneys and technical staff concerning investigation and litigation strategy and implementation;
• Provided strategic planning, business process re-engineering, policy and procedure development, office management, risk management, emergency preparedness, and training to clients which improved operations;
• Developed performance standards for government agency directors;
• Developed legal analyses and tools to assist state government agencies in their compliance with environmental, health, and safety requirements and trained agency representatives in the legal requirements and use of the tools;
• Served as agency representative on task forces concerning legislation, environmental education, procurement, information technology, acid rain, land use, Capitol Park planning, equal employment opportunity and small and disadvantaged business;
• Served as spokesperson for various employers in meetings with Congress, White House, state agency officials, Governors, Mayors, and the public and private sectors; and
• Developed and produced Getting the Job Done: The Guide To State Government Operations, which contains policies and related procedures for Michigan State Government operation and is still in use today.
I was the first African-American female to be elected to the Environmental Law Council of the Michigan Bar Association, rising to the position of President-Elect.
I think it very important that clients understand the legalities at issue, and ask questions about what is happening and why, but not try to become their own counsel in situations where a lawyer is needed.
I am happy to review any documents a client wants to present to me.
I am willing to discuss the issues and see what may be feasible.
After my father died (when I was 14), we needed to deal with lawyers to help with probate and other issues. I was not impressed with the quality of service provided and decided I could do a better job of helping people.
Most of my professional career has been in the public sector, working at the Federal, state and local level. I was honored to be a Presidential Appointee which provided an opportunity to travel and interact with people across the country as well as in Congress, business and the White House. During the course of my career I participated in litigation with the U.S. Justice Department, lead teams of lawyers, accountants and other support staff in conducting investigations of major corporations and school districts, became an expert in environment justice issues, served in many supervisory and managerial positions and worked in the community. All of these experiences provided insight into the human condition and thus, my outlook on life.
They were areas I had some knowledge about and further my desires to help people.
I like the range and scope of things I have been able to do and the number of people I have been able to help and influence.
I am a solo practitioner, so all of my clients deal directly with me. I have a small practice which allows me to provide the time each client needs.
I am direct, truthful and no nonsense. I will provide advice to my clients, understanding that they may or may not take that advice and I reserve the right to not represent clients who will not take my advice.
