Firm Focus and History

The bankruptcy attorneys at Keller, Vincent & Almassian represent individuals and businesses in bankruptcy proceedings.

Our attorneys conduct a full review of each client's financial situation, making an effort to determine if there are other options to filing bankruptcy. Often, with the advice and assistance of a bankruptcy attorney, clients can negotiate with creditors, collect from companies and individuals who owe them money and arrange non-bankruptcy forms of debt relief that help turn financial situations around without actually filing for bankruptcy.

The firm has developed a particular reputation for being able to help companies that are struggling financially avoid bankruptcy. We work with management to devise creative and effective solutions to the companies' financial problems. Our experienced corporate and bankruptcy attorneys know how to help companies negotiate with creditors, collect money owed, resolve disputes and get back on strong financial footing, often without filing for bankruptcy.

Initially the firm began in 1985 when then partner Murray B. DeGroot hired James M. Keller and Brian D. Vincent as partners in the firm. The firm focused at that time in bankruptcy exclusively, with Brian D. Vincent as a litigation specialist. The firm was further expanded when A. Todd Almassian joined the firm in 1996. Currently the firm has six attorneys, two litigation lawyers and four bankruptcy lawyers. Both attorneys A. Todd Almassian and James M. Keller are Board Certified Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys.

Previous Employment Summary

I have been a member of Keller, Vincent & Almassian for my entire legal career.

Activities and Awards

Our firm is an AV Rated firm and I have been a partner since 1998. Currently, I have been elected to be Chairman of the Federal Bar Association Bankruptcy Section for the Western District of Michigan. My term begins the summer of 2008. This past year I was admitted by the American Board of Certification as a Board Certified Consumer Bankruptcy Specialist.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I encourage clients to educate themselves on legal issues. It allows me to provide them with more meaningful information once they have a basis of knowledge.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Typically there are very few opportunities for a debtor to complete bankruptcy pleadings.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am not interested in coaching people who want to represent themselves. I find that given the inexpensive nature of bankruptcy filings that there is no benefit to doing so.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I decided to become a lawyer because I wanted to help people.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I grew up in a small business environment and believe I have a practical way of applying the law to my clients' personal needs and business needs.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Bankruptcy embraces all areas of the laws from real estate to construction to business to contracts.

What do you like best about your career?

I enjoy helping people while maintaining autonomy as an attorney.

Tell us about your law firm:

We have six attorneys and a staff of ten, which includes six very qualified bankruptcy paralegals. I am most proud of the fact that the people I work with in our firm have been here for a number of years. Our paralegals are dedicated to our clients and provide the highest level of legal and ethical services to those who find themselves in financial difficulties.

What are your strengths and style?

We treat our clients with dignity and respect while advising them of their options under the bankruptcy code.

Personal Interests:

Our law firm has roots in the West Michigan community and many members of the firm are active hunters and outdoors folks.
