Continuing Education

I attend continuing legal education seminars throughout the year, and keep abreast of recent studies, legal articles and changes made in the areas of law that I practice in.

Example Cases

There was a case with a married couple who had 8 adult children and the father passed away. The father had no estate plan in place, so there were already some estate administration matters that the surviving spouse and children would need to address. But then a few months later, the mother also passed away with no estate plan in place. At first, the eight children were in agreement as to how to handle their parents' estate administration and distribution. But after a few sibling arguments, each started to get their own attorneys, and what should have been a brief probate matter turned into an estate fight lasting over 8 years. All of this could have been avoided if their parents had taken the time to establish an estate plan for themselves.

Firm Focus and History

My firm focuses primarily on estate planning (wills, trusts, etc.), probate matters and trust administration. In addition, my firm incorporates LLC's and Non-Profit Corporations. We can also handle legal name changes and some real estate conveyance matters and contract formation.

After working for an established law firm in downtown Honolulu for 2 years, I opened my own solo practice on the Windward side in Kaneohe, being closer to my home and family. 2 years later I was fortunate enough to expand my practice to include an office location in the downtown area on Bishop Street. While my offices are based on Oahu, I am more than happy to travel to the neighbor islands to help meet the estate planning needs of the people on those islands.

Previous Employment Summary

Following graduation and passing the Hawaii State Bar, I worked for a law firm that specialized in estate planning and probate matters for about 2 years and then opened my own practice focusing on the same legal services.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I feel that it is in the client's best interest to learn as much as they can about any legal issue they are interested in exploring. I am often pleasantly surprised that when I first meet clients, they have at least a general knowledge about the area of law that they have come to me to help them with. I truly believe that the more a client knows about the legal issues that affect them, the more comfortable and at ease they will be with the overall process and subject matter.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am more than happy to review and discuss any documents prepared by clients. The best way to formulate an effective plan to take to the client is to understand where the client's journey in this matter has begun.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

If a client shows that they are competent and knowledgeable in the area of law that they wish to represent themselves in, I am more than happy to strengthen their efforts. It's all about ensuring that the client is acting in their best interests, whether I am involved or not.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I understood that while the attorney profession as a whole holds a negative reputation in many people's minds, it is an area where a great deal of good and justice can be accomplished. I have always wanted to be placed into a position where I could do the most good for my community as a whole. I felt that being an attorney would allow me to utilize the knowledge and skills gained through law school and practical experience in a way that empowers individuals and protects them from those who would seek to use that same knowledge in an immoral way.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

As a law student, I was involved with an elder law class in which we had a project to visit a variety of retirement homes and facilities. In addition, we researched these facilities as if we were going to have a family member live at them. We read numerous state reports about specific retirement homes, and even a large number of abuse reports. I always keep that experience in mind, remembering that the ongoing focus and my ultimate goal is to ensure that my clients are very well taken care of and that I do everything possible to safeguard their needs.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I've always been a believer in and an advocate of preventative medicine. I found that by being an estate planning attorney, I could help people avoid many potential future problems for themselves and their loved ones, while helping to give them peace of mind. I wanted to be a part of a profession where I could do good for people, a profession where my rewards and benefits come from my client's smiles, expressions of comfort and feelings of safety resulting from the work I have done for them. That is the greatest reward for me as an attorney.

What do you like best about your career?

I really enjoy the client interaction. In this type of law practice, I really have the pleasure of getting to know a great variety of people who have had fascinating life experiences and perspectives. I truly feel that as I gain new clients, I may also be welcoming wonderful people into my life.

Tell us about your law firm:

I feel very fortunate to be able to operate as a sole practitioner. That way, I can handle all office matters myself and assist my clients from the very beginning at their initial phone call. My clients can have all their questions and concerns addressed by me. There is no chance they will be passed on and around to other associates as often happens in a large impersonal law firm.

What are your strengths and style?

I don't really have a style or pattern that I always go by. Different clients have different personalities and needs. All I try to do is keep the client as informed as possible about what I am doing for them. My goal is to make my clients feel comfortable with the entire process and to let them know that I am working diligently for them to meet their goals and give them peace of mind.

Personal Interests:

There's a lot in life that I enjoy doing such as taking my dog for walks with my wife, playing basketball with my brother and friends, taking my mother shopping, babysitting my niece, making home improvements (at least trying my best not to make things worse), and cooking for my wife.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

For most legal services I do offer a fixed flat rate. My estate planning package includes a revocable living trust, last will and testament, power of attorney, advance health care directive (medical power of attorney) and real property deeds to place property into the revocable trust. For a single client the cost would be $1,000 and for a married couple it would be $1,600.

Probate matters vary depending on complexity, but usually start at $2,000. Business (LLC) and non-profit incorporation fees start at $500. Legal name changes are $400 plus court/filing fees.

Hourly Rates

Most of my services are offered for a flat fee. Those that I must charge an hourly rate are done so at $200 per hour, but whenever at all possible, I like to present a flat fee so there are no surprises for my client regarding billing.

Free Initial Consultation?

I am more than happy to offer free initial consultations with no set time limit.

Typical Retainer

In most cases my retainer is 50% of the total service charge, if charged a flat fee. For clients who prefer, I am happy to offer payment plans to make my services more affordable.
