Here are a couple of quick stories:
Mary and Bill worked hard all their lives to pay for their home and to accumulate a modest savings. Bill developed Alzheimer's disease and eventually needed nursing home care. Bill and Mary could not afford the high cost of care and wanted to pass some of their hard-earned savings to their daughter and grandson. We were able to help Bill and Mary provide a portion of their estate to their daughter and use a portion of their estate to pay for Bill's nursing home for several months. Bill was then able to qualify for Medicaid benefits to pay for his nursing home care and Mary was able to have enough savings left to keep her home and pay her own living expenses.
Amy was in a serious automobile accident which left her partially paralyzed and in need of care. Her personal injury attorney was able to achieve a large settlement for her. We were able to arrange for the settlement to be placed in a Special Needs Trust so that Amy could qualify for SSI and Medicaid benefits to pay for her care; and the trust provided a supplemental fund to pay for extra items and services the SSI or Medicaid do not cover, such as a handicapped-accessible van and a deluxe powered wheelchair. After almost 5 years of physical therapy, Amy's trust paid for her to go back to college. She now works part-time as a disability counselor.

I cherish an educated client who understands the legal issues affecting them. I devote a great deal of effort to encourage my clients to educate themselves; and I try to provide education to my clients as well. I want my clients to do more than "just trust me," I want them to understand what we are trying to achieve and why.
I review clients' self-prepared documents quite often. I sometime find that these documents are just fine the way they are and do not need any "improving." On the other hand, I also find errors sometimes and can provide assistance to avoid potential problems without necessarily having to completely re-do the document.
I have done this in the past in situations where our Rules of Professional Conduct allow, but it can cause problems unless the client clearly understands the limited scope of an attorney's representation in such a situation.
My family history is the major factor. My grandfather, my father and two of my brothers were lawyers. I was taught to respect the law at an early age. I was also taught the importance of the responsibility of a lawyer to his clients and to the law through my father's fine example as one of the most well-respected probate attorneys in the State of Missouri.
My background and years of experience in the law and my dedication to protect the most helpless and vulnerable among us are probably the two most important factors in making me a better lawyer.
My choice to become an Elder Law attorney was primarily the result of my wanting more than just a job to go to every day. I wanted to make a positive difference and to be able to feel good at the end of the day, knowing I actually helped someone.
The look on a client's face when I am able to help them resolve a legal concern and eliminate their worry.
I am a sole practitioner. My clients all deal with me directly in all matters; and I do all the work myself. While this can make for some long hours, it also ensures that my clients always get the best I have to offer.
My strengths are my dedication to my clients and to constantly improving my knowledge of the law. I tend towards a "hands on" approach to my practice. Many of my clients end up being friends.
My personal interests include reading, movies, camping, hiking, fishing and playing with my dog.
