I do social security and Social Security Administration cases. I represent disabled people in all stages of the social security appeal process including federal court. I also work with cases where benefits have been terminated, and I help the client to reestablish their benefits.

The typical case would be one where the client has been denied benefits by the Social Security Administration. I help the client to appeal it and we take it to Federal court and get their benefits reinstated.

I learned social security law when I was employed by the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles in the late 1970s. When Legal Aid lost some of its funding and could no longer represent disability applicants they started referring the cases to private attorneys. I began to receive referrals through them.
We deal with people who are denied disability benefits. They retain me to help them with their appeal and I represent them in administrative hearings. I also work with people who are cut off of benefits.
I worked with Legal Aid Foundation in Los Angeles for a year. I worked for the labor firm Levy and Goldman for about six months, and then I went into private practice.
I was the Chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Social Security Section.
I think it is important that clients understand the process of appealing and also that they understand the requirements of the social security/disability programs. I think it is important that clients educate themselves about their conditions so they are able to be assertive in their wellbeing.
I welcome documents prepared by clients. I encourage my clients to send me papers, medical records and such regarding their case.
I am not sure I would be dealing with that issue as I deal with people who want representation. In the past people who have represented themselves have been referred to me for representation.
I was very politically active in college and some of my activities brought me into contact with attorneys and the legal system. I believed I could use law as a vehicle for civil change. I believe that all people should be entitled to access to the legal system.
I had so many jobs when I was growing up and in most of the jobs I had I was required to interact with other people. A lot of the jobs were low-paying manual labor jobs. Those jobs gave me an appreciation for hard work, working as part of a team, and being sensitive to the day-to-day problems people have.
I wanted to help people who have traditionally denied access to the legal system, and people who are low income or disabled. There are very few lawyers who handle these kinds of cases. My area of law required a lot of interaction with clients.
I enjoy helping people get benefits that they deserve. I feel good when I can bring a measure of comfort to people.
I am a solo practitioner, so all of my clients deal directly with me. I have two secretaries who are bilingual paralegals.
My strength is that I am a fierce advocate for my clients. I am pretty well organized and have been working in this area of law a long time. I am not stand-offish. I am always open to talking with my clients and run a very open office. I get a large number of referrals from former clients and I take that as a vote of confidence from them.
I do a lot of travel. I love my family - my wife and kids. I enjoy sports.
