Continuing Education

I am fully committed to continuing legal education even though New Jersey presently has no continuing legal education requirements. In the area of bankruptcy, I have been ECF certified and trained for electronic filing with the US Bankruptcy Court. This is a great advantage to my clients because I am almost instantly notified of any and all activity in the bankruptcy case and can react quickly to protect your rights. Even if I am not at the office I can receive all the notices whenever I am on the internet. When the Bankruptcy Abuse and Prevention Act was passed in 2005 making the most radical change in bankruptcy law, I quickly was educated in the Act even before it took effect. I attended the May 22nd, 2005 NJ Institute of Continuing Legal Education (hereinafter NJICLE) seminar on the Act months before it took full effect. I also joined the Bankruptcy Inns of Court, New Jersey Southern Division from 2005 to 2007 to keep me educated in the new bankruptcy law and I still access their web site for all their current materials. I have also attended the February 22nd, 2006 Burlington-Camden County Bench-Bar Bankruptcy Conference. More recently I have attended the Camden County Bar Association's 15th Annual Bankruptcy Conference on January 22nd, 2008.

My continuing legal education is also well rounded. Keeping up on employment law I recently attended the Camden County Bar Association's seminar on Pre-Trial Strategies in Employment Cases on February 21st, 2008. On February 23rd, 2008 I attended the American Trial Lawyer's of America- New Jersey Educational Foundation seminar Litigation Sampler: Causes of Action to Shift Your Fee along with three other concurrent seminars. These types of seminars are offered up to four times a year and I usually attend two of them.

Example Cases

A home is being foreclosed on. The sheriff's sale is scheduled next week. We are able to file a complete chapter 13 bankruptcy before the sheriff's sale. The sale is canceled. The homeowner is able to resume mortgage payments the next month. The homeowner also pays a modest fee to the Chapter 13 trustee to catch up on the arrears over the next five years. The home owner keeps their home and does not have to find new living accommodations with no credit.

Firm Focus and History

The Law Offices of Mark W. Ford were formed in June, 1992 and has been located at its present location for the past fifteen years. I own the premises free and clear of any liens. It is centrally located mid way between the Camden County and the Gloucester County Courthouses. It is also within 15 minutes of the US Bankruptcy Court and the U.S. District Court.

We have been focused on defending the rights of people for the past fifteen plus years. This includes giving people a fresh start freed from their debts in chapter 7 bankruptcies. We also handle chapter l3 cases which can save your home when its in foreclosure at any time prior to the home being sold at a sheriff's sale, saving or restoring your driver's license suspended for the non payment of debts and court fines, saving peoples cars from repossession and returning peoples' cars after being repossessed, etc. We also can postpone your sheriff sales and if a sheriff sale has already occurred, we can extend the time to redeem your home so you can sell your home and save the equity. We are also fully prepared to defend foreclosure actions and prosecute claims of Truth in Lending Act violations. The present foreclosure crisis has in large part been caused by Truth in Lending Act violations with mortgage companies misrepresenting the terms of the mortgages being offered. We also prosecute your claims for work place injuries, auto injuries, slip and falls and injuries caused by products and drugs.

Previous Employment Summary

From 1989 to 1992 I was employed at Console, Marmero, LiVolsi, Curcio and Wood, P.C. were I gained extensive jury trial experience in personal injury cases as well as extensive experience in the practice of law.

From 1988 to 1989 I was employed as a staff attorney at Liberty Mutual in the Law Offices of Sue Ellen Johnson, where I gained extensive experience on the inner workings of an insurance company and how they settle cases.

Activities and Awards

Arbitrator for the Superior Court, Camden County.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

A well educated consumer is always welcome. However, I note a little knowledge can be dangerous, especially in the bankruptcy where there are many pitfalls for the unwary. If there is a lot at stake you should always consult with an attorney.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am willing to review documents prepared by clients.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am willing to coach clients representing themselves. In many cases the cost of an attorney can be counterproductive, especially in Special Civil Part - Small Claim cases.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I tried being normal, but it just wasn't me.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My clients have not driven me crazy yet, and that makes me stronger. After being married to my first wife, the practice of law seems to be a breeze by comparison.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I have always identified strongly with the importance of a good home. Then I became involved in Metropolitan Camden Habitat for Humanity, Inc. (MCHH) which builds simple decent homes for God's people in need. I incorporated MCHH and I was the first treasurer, the second President and am currently the Recording Secretary and board member. Bankruptcy and saving homes for people who already had them seem to fit in nicely. The Judeo-Christian teachings on forgiveness, strongly supports the bankruptcy fresh start approach that frees Chapter 7 debtors drowning from their debts.

What do you like best about your career?

Retirement. However I am not so successful that I can seriously contemplate retirement without taking a vow of poverty so I toil on.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner and I meet all my clients. For my bankruptcy clients I always conduct a thorough first interview. After that my very capable secretary Dawn Sorbello, who is a talented computer operator and knows all the ins and outs of how to file bankruptcies and what needs to be filed and the information that needs to be gathered to complete the bankruptcies, is able to handle most of the paper and electronic work while I am in court.

I have a law clerk, Matthew Blaine, who is great researcher and brief writer and is helping keep me stay abreast in the current laws.

Amanda Brittingham is the receptionist and back-up typist. She is excellent at doing all sorts of odd jobs that need to be done but that require perseverance to complete.

What are your strengths and style?

I have a sense of humor and can put my clients at ease who are facing a tough situation.

Personal Interests:

Chess; baseball; APBA baseball; the Phillies; the Eagles (football); music; politics; reading; the environment; missions and charitable work.
