Continuing Education

I have always exceeded the required amount of CLE hours. In order to maintain my Board Certification in Consumer Bankruptcy, I am required to regularly attend CLE in an amount far greater than is necessary merely to remain qualified to practice. In addition, I have attended specialized training in the area of mortgage foreclosures and bankruptcy litigation. Finally, I have taught numerous CLE courses including, but not limited to, Ethics, assorted bankruptcy topics, landlord/tenant law, and mortgage foreclosure litigation.

Example Cases

One recent case involved a young woman with a brain aneurysm who was receiving persistent and abusive collection calls. When the debt collector told her he'd call "until her brain blew out," we sued and successfully recovered a large sum for her.

In another recent case, a property owner was facing foreclosure and was forced to file bankruptcy. In the course of the bankruptcy, it became clear the mortgage company had defrauded her and assessed thousands of dollars worth of bogus fees and charges to her mortgage. We sued the mortgage company and were able to obtain a loan modification at a lower rate of interest, with all arrearages and charges wiped out.

Firm Focus and History

We help people. Whether helping them through bankruptcy, helping them deal with abusive debt collectors, defend a criminal charge, assert a constitutionally protected right, or helping them recover when they have been the victim of professional or medical malpractice, we help the little guy.

Our firm was the result of a vision shared by our partners. Each of us was an established and successful lawyer in our own chosen area, and we formed this firm in order to bring all of our talents to bear on the specific problems of our clients.

My particular area of interest has always been consumer law and bankruptcy, and I have been helping individuals deal with excessive debt and abusive debt collectors for over ten years.

Previous Employment Summary

I served honorably in the United States Air Force, and retired with 20 years service in 1994.

Activities and Awards

I have been recognized by the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys for my work helping to move consumer-friendly legislation through Congress. I have also been recognized for support of pro bono work through the Dauphin County Bar Association, Mid Penn Legal Services, and the bankruptcy court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I like an educated client. They are easier to help, partly because they understand what kind of information I need to do my job. A client who is able to educate themselves will understand the issues easier, and be easier to work with. However, the practice of law, especially in the area of bankruptcy, is full of traps for the unwary and I would never recommend someone trying to file bankruptcy without qualified representation. Particularly in the area of consumer law, it has been my experience that debt collectors and creditors will not take the individual seriously until they are represented by counsel.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

In my particular specialty areas, bankruptcy and consumer law, I usually want to prepare the appropriate documents for my clients, for two reasons. First, I want to make sure they are done correctly and in the proper form for the district and particular court. People are often surprised to learn that a similar document varies widely in form from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and even from court to court within a particular area. This is one of the reasons people hire me - to make sure that they can achieve the result they want. Often that means filing the right papers at the right time with the right people. That's my job. Second, usually people who are trying to do documents themselves are hoping to save a few bucks. At least in my area, that's usually penny-wise and pound foolish, and it'll usually end up costing more than if I prepared everything myself. Bankruptcy, in particular, is an area where individuals should not try to prepare their schedules and petitions themselves.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am generally unwilling to do that. When I commit myself and the resources of my firm to someone, I want my client to know he has a lawyer, and I want to know I have a client.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I went to law school later in life after a full career in the United States Air Force. I wanted to be a lawyer for as long as I can remember. For me the attraction was always helping the little guy battle against the institutional bullies of the world.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I actually think having law as a second career has made me a better lawyer. I have had a lot of varied experiences, done a lot of interesting things, and am a much more mature person than when I was in my early 20's.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I got into bankruptcy law in large part because of the enormous respect I had for Judge Woodside, who sat on the bankruptcy bench in the Middle District of Pennsylvania until his untimely death several years ago. I enjoyed the camaraderie of the smaller bar, and enjoyed being able to help people who were buried in credit card debt.

What do you like best about your career?

That's easy. For the last 7 years, I have been able to have my wife working with me. After a military career, it's nice to see her everyday. It's not for everyone, but it works for us. The second best thing is the feeling that I'm making a difference in the lives of my clients.

Tell us about your law firm:

When we selected the members of the firm, we focused on finding talented people with significant legal experience, who wanted to help people.

What are your strengths and style?

My strength is relating directly to people of all ages and lifestyles, and helping them deal with their problems in as simple and straightforward a manner as possible.

Personal Interests:

I have a wide variety of interests, but my three main passions are poker, trumpet and escaping to the wilderness with a canoe and a fishing pole.
