Wills, Trusts & Estates
I prefer to work with clients who need assistance solving the problems unique to an elderly individual.
CA, Dec 1990
Bar Number: 150027
United States District Court, all districts in California
State Bar of California; Los Angeles County Bar Association
I attend or listen to a variety of CLE programs.
I frequently handle financial elder abuse cases where individuals have taken assets belonging to seniors. One recent case I was involved in dealt with a child who stripped his elderly father, who was suffering from dementia, of his home as well as financial accounts. I helped the other children obtain the appointment of a conservator and after that, obtained a seven figure judgment against the child who had taken his father's assets.

Schomer Law is a professional law corporation that specializes in elder law, probate, wills, trusts and conservatorships. We counsel clients on the unique legal issues relating to advancing age. Whenever possible, we prefer to help clients plan for the future, avoid probate, minimize taxes and solidify their legacy. We also help clients plan for possible incapacity and long-term care. We help our clients deal with issues of aging with independence and dignity. In addition to estate planning, our firm has considerable experience helping victims of elder abuse. Our firm has aggressively pursued remedies and recovered assets belonging to our elderly clients where unscrupulous individuals have taken advantage of the elderly because of diminished capacity or other impairments.
I was previously associated with the law firms of Andrews & Kurth and Allen, Matkins, Leck, Gamble & Mallory where I specialized in complex real estate litigation. I have also served as corporate counsel for technology and entertainment firms.
I have served as a Judge Pro Tem of the Los Angeles Municipal Court (before consolidation), and I am a member of the Los Angeles County Probate Volunteer Panel. From 1992 through 1998, I served as a six-year member, and three-year president, of the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice (www.laclj.org), a free legal clinic serving greater Los Angeles.
I enjoy working with clients that make the effort to educate themselves about our legal system.
It depends on the situation. I frequently ask clients to prepare summaries or timelines that are used in pleadings and often have clients contribute to the pleadings.
I have done it in the past, but it is not my favorite way to help people.
I enjoy helping people and have always had a strong sense of fairness. I frequently find myself representing clients whom I would consider to be the underdog.
My undergraduate degree included a psychology major, and I worked for several years in the mental health field before attending law school. I believe that experience gave me unique insight into issues that frequently underlie the behavior of the parties or fuel the litigation.
I focused my practice on elder law because I find it a facinating mix of counseling, history and challenging legal issues. I not only get the privilege of helping people plan for the inevitable (death and taxes) but I also get the opportunity to protect them when they are at their most vulnerable.
To the uninitiated, the legal system can be both challenging and frightening. I enjoy the intellectual and emotional fight to protect my clients and there is nothing more rewarding than obtaining a victory on their behalf.
Although I work with a paralegal and several assistants, I am directly responsible for all of my matters. I believe that it is important that my clients have direct access to me.
I believe that I am a good listener, which is the foundation to solving problems. I always try to find the best ethical and economic solutions to problems. However, when the other side is not willing to be reasonable, I am always prepared to strenuously advocate for my clients.
I enjoy spending time with my wife and two girls, playing guitar and ukulele, swimming and tennis.
