The firm was established in 2001 and focuses on providing aggressive, client-centered legal services at an affordable cost.
Prior to establishing my law firm, I had been employed in State and local government as a Clinical Social Worker, Management Analyst and mediator.
I have been a firm believer in self-help for many years (and prior to becoming an attorney, had utilized self-help utilizing Nolo Press publications). Many people are capable of handling their own legal matters, as long as they have appropriate guidance. As many Americans do not have access to legal services, self-help must remain an option for those persons.
I am happy to review documents prepared by clients, believing that in many instances this empowers them and saves them money. In my experience, clients who take an active role in their cases tend to have better outcomes than those who do not.
To a limited extent, I am comfortable coaching clients who want to represent themselves, as long as I feel that it is in their best interest and that the client fully understands the consequences of this course of action.
I decided to study law after a career in social services, where I had the opportunity to deal with legal problems experienced by my clients. Since I was already advocating for my clients as a social worker, (I had worked for the Legal Services Program as a social work intern) I believed that I could take those skills to a higher level. I also worked in conjunction with legal professionals on a variety of cases and projects involving disabilities, housing, and public benefits matters. These early experiences taught me how the legal system could help average and working people. I wanted to participate in that process.
As in my response to the previous question, my prior experience as a "helping" professional (social work), established for me the standards of dedication and hard work necessary to be successful in the practice of law. Furthermore, as I have been trained in management processes and skills (M.P.A. degree), I incorporated these processes into my office management routines, so as to foster productivity, and lower costs to my clients.
I chose bankruptcy because I derive satisfaction from the relief that this process affords my clients. I also chose this area because practice in this field is in the federal courts and affords the opportunity to work with federal rules and procedures, which I find more interesting than those in the state courts.
I enjoy the flexibility of choosing practice areas, being my own boss, and knowing that I've provided good service at a fair price.
I have a dedicated paralegal, highly experienced in bankruptcy law and procedure. He has a four-year degree, and is certified, and has a friendly style.
My strengths lie in written and oral communication skills and a belief in a consumer advocacy philosophy, since the reason that many people need to file for bankruptcy protection is related to the predatory practices of banks, credit card companies, and other lenders.
I enjoy fishing, boating, cycling, woodworking, and reading.
