I am the founder of The Williams Firm and have over 20 years of concentrated experience in real estate and construction law. Previous Employment Summary

Prior to forming The Williams Firm in 1994, which was previously known as the Law Offices of Timothy C. Williams, I was a name partner in the San Diego firm of Turner & Williams and an associate with the San Diego firm of Schall, Boudreau & Gore and the Los Angeles office of the large Philadelphia firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe it is very important that a client educate themselves concerning the legal issues involved in their own legal matter. In order to reach a successful resolution of a legal matter, it is important that the attorney and client cooperate and communicate. Thus, the client must gather and disclose to the attorney all information concerning the legal matter. Similarly, as an attorney, it is my obligation to inform the client of the legal issues and procedures involved in a given legal matter. It is not uncommon for my firm to have clients who are hiring an attorney for the first time.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am certainly willing to review documents that have been prepared by clients. In some situations, whether it is in a litigation or transactional matter, the client's ability and willingness to prepare some of the information needed for documents will save the client time and money. For example, the client could gather and assimilate data needed for a document or the client could prepare draft responses to written interrogatories as a first step in the preparation of formal, written responses to interrogatories.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am willing to advise clients concerning situations where they may be representing themselves in certain circumstances. However, I do not feel comfortable in advising clients who actually represent themselves in pending lawsuits.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I became an attorney in order to assist people in difficult situations. I find it interesting to be able to advise and guide a client through often complex and difficult legal issues.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

After practicing for over 20 years in the field of real estate and construction law, I have gained the necessary experience and expertise to advise clients in a wide range of matters. I believe my knowledge of the law, attention to detail, interpersonal skills and management of my firm, has given me unique qualifications for the representation of all kinds of clients. I have practiced law in small and medium firms and in one of the largest, international law firms, and represented individuals, the government and large corporate clients. I also have the ability to provide legal services in the event that clients have a dispute or a lawsuit, but also may help with transactional matters, such as completing a transaction or forming an entity.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

It was a conscious decision to practice in real estate and construction law from the very beginning of my career. I took courses in these areas in law school, and sought out positions at the beginning of my career in these fields. I enjoy the intellectual stimulation and complexity in real estate and construction matters.

What do you like best about your career?

I enjoy assisting clients resolve disputes, as well as helping complete transactions. The fields in which I practice are complex and intellectually stimulating. As a law review editor in law school, I became an accomplished writer, and have used that skill throughout my career. The practice of law has become increasingly based upon the ability to do a competent job of legal research and writing.

What are your strengths and style?

I believe my strengths include being able to assess a client's situation in order to identify the issue, competently advise the client of the law as applied to his situation, and recommend the best course of action for the client to pursue. I believe that I am detail oriented in the manner in which I approach the practice of law, and able to analyze particular matters in order to determine their ultimate outcomes. With over 20 years of concentrated experience in real estate and construction law, I have developed expertise in both litigation and transactional matters. I am able to communicate effectively with clients and summarize complex legal situations in an understandable manner.
