Firm Focus and History

Villa & White LLP primarily practices in the areas of bankruptcy, family and criminal law and was established in July, 2001.

Previous Employment Summary

Prior to forming my law firm, I worked for a very large, national law firm. I have also worked for a bankruptcy trustee and a medium size certified public accounting firm.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I think it is important, as long as they understand that it is usually not as simple as it seems.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Certainly, if the client is willing to take constructive criticism.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I would not do it. It really is not in the best interest of the client as I could not prepare them for every nuance that may come along.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I enjoy analyzing complex problems and developing solutions.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My business and accounting background enables me to identify with those clients who have tax problems. Often I can suggest to my small business clients some management strategies to prevent future financial problems.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Bankruptcy is one area of the law where, in my opinion, the client can see the true value of my services. The client may get relief of a significant amount of debt for a relatively small amount of money (my fee). Given the complexity of the Bankruptcy Code, many clients would not be able to represent themselves and get the financial relief available to them.

What do you like best about your career?

I get to help people overcome some very stressful financial issues. I have had many clients tell me that the night after our initial consultation they had the "first night of decent sleep in a long time."

Tell us about your law firm:

Although I do have staff members, I deal directly with my clients and prepare their case documents myself. That way I am sure to know the "ins-and-outs" of each client's case. Each one has different issues and hurdles to overcome.

What are your strengths and style?

I have worked for a large law firm, and I am not afraid to "tee it up" against the "big boys," including the IRS.

Personal Interests:

My family. I have a son and a daughter that I love to make laugh.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

There is usually a flat fee for a bankruptcy case. The amount of the flat fee fee depends on the type of bankruptcy (consumer, business, chapter etc.) and the complexity of the specific case.

Hourly Rates

For non-bankruptcy cases, I have a standard hourly rate of $200.

Free Initial Consultation?

Yes.

Typical Retainer

I do require a retainer but the amount depends on the circumstances of the case.

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
