Immigration
I handle all types of immigration and naturalization cases: family, employment, political asylum, citizenship, non-immigrant visas, and deportation defense.
CA, Dec 1985
Bar Number: 120892
California Supreme Court, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals
California State Bar
I regularly attend the annual conference of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and frequently attend local continuing legal education seminars on various topics in immigration law.
I recently received a tearful phone call from a frantic wife whose husband had been arrested by immigration officers as he walked out the house. He had failed to appear at a deportation hearing because he had not received notice -- the government had sent the notice to an old address! I was successful in convincing the judge to reopen his case, and was able to get him released on bond. I filed an appeal of his denied Temporary Protected Status application, and the judge subsequently closed his court case. He is now home, back at work and restored to legal status.
I regularly handle less dramatic, but no less important, family reunification cases -- helping citizens and permanent residents gain legal status for their foreign born fiancés, spouses, parents and children. I also have helped many clients win political asylum -- many of them who have suffered persecution in their home countries based upon their religion or their sexual orientation.

I have had my own practice since 1992. My office was located in San Francisco for six years, and I moved to my present location in downtown Berkeley in 1998.
I began my legal career as an Associate Attorney in the law office of Marc Van Der Hout in San Francisco. I was fortunate to begin my career in the late 1980s when there was a more positive immigrant environment. I was able to help scores of Mexicans and Central Americans gain legal residence through the amnesty program and political asylum. For several years, I was the Supervising Attorney with the San Francisco Bar Association HIV Legal Assistance Program, training volunteer attorneys to represent low income clients with their immigration problems. Prior to law school, I worked as a journalist.
I teach both Immigration Law and Legal Research and Writing in the paralegal certificate programs at San Francisco State University and City College of San Francisco. Some of the awards I have received include an Outstanding Volunteer award from the AIDS Legal Referral Panel of San Francisco (2006), a Senior Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching from San Francisco State University (2005), Outstanding Volunteer in Public Service from the Volunteer Legal Services Association of the San Francisco Bar Association (1999) and the Wing Chong Memorial Pro Bono Award for outstanding pro bono legal services from the American Immigration Lawyers Association Northern California Chapter (1994).
I am a firm believer in the power of knowledge. I welcome clients who take an active interest in their legal situation and spend the time to educate themselves. I recommend Nolo's articles on the basics of immigration law: http://www.nolo.com/articleByCat.cfm/catId/86F12C86-8753-405E-8A437DA6EE610EDA
I am willing to review documents prepared by clients for accuracy and completeness in a one-time consultation.
In a consultation I will review a client's options and thoroughly explain the process involved in his/her situation, step by step, including the possible pitfalls. I will also be honest when I think a client needs representation. Immigration law is a highly complex area of the law, and the law itself, as well as regulations and procedures, change frequently. Often a knowledgeable and skilled attorney is necessary to achieve a successful outcome.
To be honest, it was the result of a process of elimination. I graduated from college with degrees in psychology and journalism. I worked in both fields for a few years, but never found the right combination of intellectual challenge, social justice, and personal involvement. Immigration law turned out to be the perfect fit for me.
Being a parent has taught me all of life's greatest lessons. I try to bring respect, appreciation for difference, and honesty to everything I do in life, including my work as a lawyer.
In my life before law school, I did a great deal of traveling. I spent time in Central and South America, Europe, Canada and North Africa. I lived in Mexico for a year, studying Spanish and teaching English. I knew I wanted a career that allowed me to continue my involvement with other cultures. Immigration law is like a window on the world and has allowed me to be an arm-chair traveler now that I've put down the backpack and parked the VW van.
I love meeting people from all different countries, cultures and walks of life, and I love solving problems. I get a great deal of personal satisfaction from making a positive and lasting difference in the lives of my clients.
I am a solo practitioner, so I take personal responsibility for every aspect of my clients' cases. My clients can depend on me to know exactly what is happening in their cases, and to be readily available to them when they have questions or need help. I personally guide them through the immigration process, beginning to end.
I take a personal interest in each of my clients. I am responsive and available when they have questions or concerns. I feel that it is part of my job to make the immigration process as painless as possible.
I enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities with my two sons -- we love to camp, ski and bike.
