Firm Focus and History

Employment, Criminal, Personal Injury and Family Law. However, we can handle and have experience in many types of civil litigation from personal injury to business litigation. Since the attorney and staff speak Japanese, a majority of our cases seem to involve Japanese individuals or businesses.

My firm was established on the same day I was sworn in as an attorney (June 11, 1996). A Japanese man was being investigated by Secret Service and Treasury Department agents. I didn't have an office or much experience - but my first case was a federal case. I won the case and with the fee earned, opened my first office in Santa Barbara, CA. I eventually moved my practice to San Diego and have been here for the last 6 years. With perseverance I've continued to win cases for my clients and work my way up from my first client meeting in a café to having an office and staff on the 16th floor in downtown San Diego. I'll exercise the same perseverance in your case to put you in a much better position then when you first called my office.

Previous Employment Summary

I served 5 years in the U.S. Navy; and worked 3 years for the Japanese government in International Relations. I also worked at a Title Insurance Company, for the Public Defender's Office, and the law school library while attending law school.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

The more educated a client is on the facts, issues, and law surrounding their problem, the better we can communicate, strategize, and increase our chances of prevailing.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

If the documents are related to the case I have been hired for, I'll review ALL documents prepared by my client.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I have done this before in certain situations, but I'll always advise the client to retain an attorney if the matter is beyond their ability.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

Being a lawyer allows me to both question the authority of those imposing their authority upon my clients and to prevent my clients from being victimized by those who improperly exercise power and authority over them.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I'm a self made man. Put myself through college and law school. I started my firm with my first client meeting at a café, the day I became a lawyer. I've lived in Japan for 3 years and learned the language and traveled to South America. I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, am an accomplished rock and ice climber, and ski patroller during the winter. I don't crack under pressure and have successfully prevailed against some of the largest corporations in the U.S. and Japan, which were represented by their equally largest law firms in the U.S. I truly appreciate the freedoms we enjoy in the U.S. and how important it is to protect our way of life.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

While I was employed in Japan, I experienced first hand what it was like to be discriminated against in an employment setting. It frustrated me enough to take action - I didn't want others to experience what I had experienced. Another reason, I was harassed by police when I was in high school - trying to extort me to become a snitch - and that experience developed a "question authority" attitude.

What do you like best about your career?

I can help people in their greatest time of need. There is tremendous satisfaction for any attorney and their client when they prevail; especially when it appears the odds are against them.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner and all clients will deal directly with me.

What are your strengths and style?

My strength is perseverance! My style is best described as aggressive.

Personal Interests:

Working out at the gym, skiing, surfing, mountain sports including alpine/ice/rock climbing.
