Family Law
I prefer clients at the beginning of new divorce cases, rather than after someone else has represented them in their case. I handle complex family law cases and appeals involving business valuations, pension rights and out of state property.

I have been in practice as a family lawyer since January 1975, and I have managed my own firm since 1981. During that period I have handled more than a thousand Family Law matters, including many appeals to the California Appellate Courts and the California Supreme Court.
I represent clients in all phases of marriage dissolution and nullification, as well as appeals of all kinds of Family Law matters. This includes pre- and post-judgment motions, support, child custody and visitation, and simple and complex property division issues. I will represent clients in the traditional all-inclusive mode or in the newer unbundled (issue by issue) mode, depending on client wishes and comfort in doing things for themselves.
U.S. Air Force, four years after high school; Pacific Telephone & Telegraph, technical manager, between finishing college and starting law school.
I am a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a Master of the Robert McGrath Inn of Court (a mentoring organization). I have served on the Contra Costa County Bar Association Family Law Section Board of Directors and edited Section newsletter. I have served as Chair of the Contra Costa County Bar Association Technology Committee in implementing the Bar Association website.
I attempt to provide my clients with complete information about what is going on in their cases, educate them as to the issues involved and ask for their help in preparing their cases. To the extent possible, clients should understand their own case as well as I do, so that they know to bring to my attention any facts they know better than I.
I frequently review and advise clients on agreements that they have worked out between themselves and their spouses, both before and after the negotiation.
I provide unbundled (issue by issue) legal services at any level requested by my clients, including counseling, document preparation and single issue court appearances.
I like to help people solve problems. Having been through my parents' own divorce, it seemed to me that I could use the insight that came from that experience to guide people to positive outcomes, particularly for their children.
I have participated and continue to participate in civic affairs, service organizations, youth sports and school organizations, and have observed how many thousands of people, young and old, approach their own lives and problems. I have worked at absorbing those observations into my own experience in coaching people toward success.
It provides the best opportunity in the profession to interact with and directly assist people who have major problems to solve.
The relationships I have with people in general and my clients.
I am a solo practitioner, working with my wife as my paralegal, so all contact with my firm is with me either directly or indirectly.
I have been told that I am able to explain complicated legal issues in ways that make them understood by people who are not lawyers.
Community service, travel, photography, college sports.
