Firm Focus and History

My firm focuses on real estate litigation, transactions, appeals, and federal and state white collar criminal defense.

I have approximately nine years of experience in real estate litigation and transactions including trial experience, eminent domain, failure to disclose, fraud, breach of contract, construction defect, lease and purchase negotiations, and complex problem solving and settlement in mediation and arbitration. I have represented home sellers, home buyers, home owners, mortgage brokers, real estate agents and appraisers in various litigation and pre-litigation scenarios.

I have seven years of white collar criminal defense experience starting as an intern at the San Diego Public Defender and the Federal Public Defender in San Jose. I have handled Federal and State white collar criminal defense matters including motions to suppress and other pre-trial motions, trials and appeals. I wrote, argued and won a full reversal on appeal in People v. Hsieh, a theft of trade secret case (de published after much controversy).

Previous Employment Summary

I was previously employed at various law firms in the bay area where I specialized in business/real estate, eminent domain, white collar crime litigation, trials and appeals. I also have been a real estate broker for Prudential California Realty and Coldwell Banker, and have my own independent real estate brokerage.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

It is not necessary for my clients to educate themselves about their legal issues before hiring me as I am happy to explain their legal rights and options; however, I am also glad when they have already researched some of the obvious issues because it gives us a baseline for understanding their legal matter and for working together toward successful resolution.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am happy to review documents prepared by clients and make any appropriate suggestions that are in their best interest concerning the drafting.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am happy to coach clients who want to represent themselves.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I have always felt that it is my true calling. Many have called me a "true believer," meaning that I feel a calling to justice and the law that goes beyond just running a business and making a living.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My trial and appellate experience in both State and Federal courts and for civil and criminal matters really sets me apart from other attorneys, who lack trial experience or who have, for example, never practiced in Federal Court.

My experience in all of these areas has made me an enormous asset for global settlement negotiations when there is more than one case at stake and particularly when there is both a criminal and civil case at stake.

On the real estate side, unlike other real estate attorneys, I have actually sold residential real estate in the trenches for eight years (in good markets and bad) and have my own real estate brokerage. I really bring an understanding of the residential real estate business and the inner workings of residential real estate markets to bear in my representation of parties involved in residential real estate litigation.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I always wanted to be a trial lawyer, so I gravitated toward the kinds of cases that increased my chances to try cases: criminal law and eminent domain. I received A grades in law school for property law and for mock trial. My passion for markets and economics, together with my keen interest in research and trials, lends itself nicely to each of these areas.

What do you like best about your career?

I love getting results for my clients. I love resolving complex problems.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am a solo practitioner with excellent support staff on hand when needed.

What are your strengths and style?

I am told that my research and courtroom skills are stellar. I love to negotiate and work things out when the parties are willing to do so as I like resolution. My style is friendly but on purpose.
