Business Law
I prefer to work with individual owners of small and mid-size businesses. I prefer an on-going business relationship, but I can help with one-time "fix-it" situations.
Real Estate
I like a variety of case types -- residential and commercial -- involving all aspects of real property law. I can work with principals or agents to deal with crises or problem prevention.

I have 27 years of general practice experience with an emphasis on civil litigation, but also including writing various kinds of documents (e.g., contracts, leases, loan notes and wills and trusts). This has included family law, real property issues (including landlord/tenant disputes) and assisting small businesses (e.g., incorporation, business transfers and collections).
I have been self-employed in my practice since 1993. I work out of my house in San Jose and try to structure my fees to be affordable for people who might find other law firms too expensive.
I have continuously been a "general practice" attorney. I began working out of an apartment in 1980, became an associate attorney with Gazzera & Antonioli (1981-1986), and was a junior partner with Stephen Gazzera, Jr. when their partnership ended (1986-1992). I was an associate for Ann Koo (1992-1993) but was fired because I insisted that serving my client was more important than obeying my employer.

I encourage people to have information about "the law" and how the court system works -- particularly how those things effect their own situations and concerns. I previously taught paralegal and in pro per classes.
I do this in my practice -- so long as there is a clear understanding of what the scope of my activities is. I also have prepared documents for persons representing themselves in court proceedings.
I have done this in my practice in the form of reviewing and preparing documents (e.g., pleadings, motions and discovery papers) and providing consultations for hearing preparations.
I took a pre-law class in college that I enjoyed and did well in. More importantly, I was a volunteer Selective Service Advisor (Draft Counselor) at the Quaker House when I was at the University of Chicago, and found I had an ability for giving people information and explanations about legal regulations so they could make their own choices in difficult situations.
27 years experience as a general practice attorney and small businessman.
I prefer to do different kinds of things with a mind to how different subjects relate to each other in the "big picture." I prefer that my efforts make a difference in helping clients to understand their legal situation so they can make necessary decisions.
That I am able to help people deal with issues that are important to them -- even if it involves making difficult choices.
As a sole practitioner, I emphasize direct personal communications between myself and my clients. I expect my clients to be active participants in their legal concerns and cases -- including provide the information and documents I request from them.
I am fairly informal. I stress the importance of communication, as well as trying to help my clients understand how the courts work and how the various laws effect their concerns. I encourage clients to perform research, filing and other tasks to reduce expenses. I encourage compromise where it makes sense, but I am persistent on behalf of my client(s) if settlement is not possible.
