Example Cases

I handled one case in which two girls were burned badly when a bulldozer hit a gas line outside their house and gas migrated inside. I sued the gas company as well as the construction company and we recovered more than $30 million for the girls.

I am currently working on a case against the manufacturer of Seroquel, a drug for schizophrenia. The drug causes diabetes and the drug company did not warn users that they could develop diabetes. I represent several hundred people in this case.

Firm Focus and History

We remain dedicated to the protection of victims of pharmaceutical products, defective products and environmental exposures. We also continue to represent those suffering catastrophic injuries caused by explosions, trucking accidents, clergy molestation, asbestos, burns and falls.

Because we have spent years litigating catastrophic and mass tort cases across the United States, we stand ready to protect the rights of clients, nationwide. We have both bilingual attorneys and staff to assist our Spanish speaking clients. Further, we have the knowledge, financial resources, experience, and reputation required to handle the toughest cases.

If your family has experienced an adverse reaction to any prescription medication, please contact Matthews & Associates. Our Texas personal injury attorneys have a passion for justice and a fierce loyalty to our clients.

Previous Employment Summary

After graduating from law school in 1988, I joined a personal injury defense firm. I quickly realized I had a strong desire to help injured people, not the companies responsible for their injuries. A couple of years later, I joined the plaintiff's firm of Abraham Watkins Nichols Sorrels Matthews & Friend, where my trial record and success representing victims of catastrophic and often fatal injuries quickly lead me to become a Partner. After more than sixteen years of successful practice with Abraham Watkins Nichols Sorrels Matthews & Friend, in January 2007 I formed the firm of Matthews & Associates.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

It's always a good idea, although it isn't required.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Absolutely. The more information a client can give us, the better.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I believe that representing one's self is a bad idea.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

The challenge of preparation and argument in helping others.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have practiced law for almost 20 years and have tried hundreds of cases in front of a jury. I've been a people person all my life and enjoy talking to juries. My personal skills and experience representing injured people allow me to feel comfortable in the courtroom. This comfort level and experience translates into successful verdicts.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I wanted to be an advocate for injured people.

What do you like best about your career?

The education in new areas of law, cases and the human condition.

What are your strengths and style?

Understanding Fees

Nolo's Licensing Check

Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.

Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
