Activities and Awards

I am a regular speaker at continuing education programs for other lawyers and have written many articles on real estate law for attorneys. I also volunteer as a free arbitrator for attorney/client fee disputes.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe it is a good idea.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Yes, I am willing to review client-prepared documents.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am not usually willing to coach clients.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I wanted to attend graduate school, but did not want to pursue a Ph.D in my college major, Political Science. I decided that a law degree would allow me the flexibility to practice as a lawyer, or work in related fields in government, journalism, or business. Being a lawyer allows me to take advantage of my strengths in reading, writing, and thinking , and avoiding my weaknesses in mathematics, and scientific and technical matters.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Over the past 26 years I have resolved problems for literally hundreds of clients in all of the most common areas of real estate disputes, including purchase/sale disputes, failure to disclose defects, broker malpractice, boundary and easement disputes, commercial landlord/tenant and leasing problems, commercial and investment purchase/sale contracts, construction defects, title disputes, foreclosures, mechanics liens, and code enforcement matters. I have tried approximately 30 cases, including about six jury trials.

I enjoy preparing and trying cases. I keep up with recent developments in real estate law by making sure that I take substantially more than the required continuing education classes, by attending the annual continuing education retreat of the Real Property section of the State Bar Of California, by subscribing to and reading appropriate professional magazines, and by preparing and delivering seminar talks to other attorneys on real estate related topics.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

There is something very fundamental about real property law that appeals to me. Everyone has some relation to real property, whether as an owner, tenant, investor, or commercial user.

What do you like best about your career?

I enjoy helping my clients achieve the best possible results in their litigation or transactional matters. I especially enjoy research and writing, and oral advocacy.

Tell us about your law firm:

Most of my cases are referred to me by other lawyers. I have three "of counsel" attorneys and one contract attorney who work with me on litigation and transactional matters. We have the flexibility to assign between one and three lawyers to any particular case, depending on its size and complexity. My excellent support staff includes a full-time Office Manager/Legal Secretary and a full-time Receptionist, as well as a part-time filing clerk and a part-time billing clerk.

What are your strengths and style?

I have strong analytical skills. I am a thorough researcher and an excellent writer. I am vigorous and a creative oral advocate.

I adhere to the Code of Civility of the Alameda County Bar Association. I use what I call a "two track" approach to litigation. I prepare every case as if it were going to trial (the first track), but am simultaneously attempting to achieve a reasonable and fair settlement (the second track). I am a vigorous advocate, but do my best to maintain a civil and professional relationship with all opposing counsel.

Personal Interests:

I am a baseball fan, an avid reader, especially of history, biographies, poetry and novels.
