We prefer new clients who have complex and challenging family law problems. We offer those clients not only the necessary technical skills, but also the ability to work with them in developing good strategies. We like to work with clients who like to take advantage of our wealth of experience and our wisdom. We can be conciliatory, but tough, or aggressive, depending upon what you need (see www.johnkgrubb.com).
We handle divorces involving complex property issues, separate property issues, retirement benefits, tracing issues, business valuations, custody and child support issues. Also child support and child custody modifications, and prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.

John K. Grubb & Associates is a leading law firm handling divorce law, community property division, child custody, child support, premarital and marital property agreements, alimony, visitation rights, domestic violence, family violence, etc.

After graduating with a BBA and MBA with majors in finance and accounting, I joined Shell Oil Company and then the old Gulf Oil Company (now Chevron), doing complex business valuations and financial analysis. I gained a wealth of experience in understanding complex problems, developing strategies for solving problems, and presenting those strategies to top management, and then following through on implementing the solutions.
While working with the oil companies I started night law school and fell in love with the law. I started practicing law in 1973 and have handled virtually every variety of problems over the years. I have probably tried 50 plus jury trial, more than 500 trials to the court, and 25 appeals. I have been able to use my skills, wisdom and experience to successfully settle many cases.
I am "AV-Rated" by Martindale-Hubbell, Peer Review Rated for Ethical Standards and Legal Ability.
"AV: The preeminent rating, achievable only after admission to the Bar for at least ten years, indicating the highest level of legal ability and ethics. The pinnacle of professional excellence."

I thing that it is very important for clients to educate themselves. It is their case or problem and they need to understand how the law is going to affect them. By the same token, clients need to remember that they are hiring an attorney because of the attorney's skill, knowledge, and wisdom.
For more information about the firm, please see my firm's websites at www.johnkgrubb.com and www.houstonpremarital.com.
I do not review documents prepared by clients.
No. The learning curve is simply too great. For a client to try to represent himself or herself is like a lay person doing an appendectomy--the first 15 times your try it the patient will die.
I like to work with people and wanted to get into a profession where I could help them. I like to take the law and make it work for my clients. I like to develop strategies. I am good on my feet and can effectively represent clients in court.
My educational background, prior work experience, 34 years of practicing law, Board Certification, continuing education and growth make me a very effective advocate for my clients.
I chose family law because family law requires an attorney to have a very broad knowledge and understanding of different areas of the law and business as well as human nature. My life experiences and educational background make me well suited to family law.
I love every aspect of my career. When I started practicing law I set several objectives -- to practice top quality law, to make a living, and to enjoy working with my clients.

My personal life is very rewarding and varied. I love spending time raising my children. I have an old Rolls Royce and have been active with the Rolls Royce Owners Club. I have served on the West University City Council. I have also served as an Elder in my church. I love travel, boating and scuba.
