Example Cases

I frequently employ creative theories to win cases that may initially appear weak, or to find the right visa to fit a client's interests. I had a client who came to me with an aggravated felony under immigration law. He was in removal proceedings with no options for relief. Through a creative theory, I was able to terminate his case in court to allow him to apply for citizenship. He became a citizen and I helped him petition for his wife. Later they brought their new baby to my office! That was an incredible experience, and it reaffirmed how important it is to fight for someone even when the case appears hopeless.

Firm Focus and History

Since opening in 2001, the Law Office of Amie Miller has provided experienced and effective legal representation in a broad range of immigration matters. I am a strong believer in immigrant rights and work hard to ensure that my clients receive fair treatment under the law. I am certified by the State Bar of California as a Specialist in Immigration and Nationality Law, and my practice is devoted exclusively to immigration law. I have successfully navigated my clients through the immigration process before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (formerly known as the INS), Immigration Court, Board of Immigration Appeals and Federal Court.

Previous Employment Summary

I have practiced law since 1996, and Immigration Law exclusively since 1999. Prior to 1999, I also worked in the areas of Criminal Law, Civil Litigation, and International Law.

Activities and Awards

I am an active participant in the San Francisco legal community. I served as the District Counsel Liaison of the Executive Board of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Northern California Chapter (2001 to 2002) and on the Executive Board of the Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (1999 to 2001). I additionally serve as a mentor attorney for the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Aids Legal Referral Panel and additionally regularly participate in local legal clinics.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I consider client education to be a critical role in representation. If clients understand the process, and what they need to prove, they are better prepared for court hearings, interviews, etc. Clients should be wary of anecdotal experiences and advice, because they can be unnecessarily stressful or misleading.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I determine this on a case by case basis. I cannot give complete advice on a case someone else prepared, because I will not have the complete picture.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

See above. I generally do not think this is the best way to help the clients. However, I am happy to offer a consultation to discuss potential issues and the immigration process generally.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I decided to become a lawyer because I am an advocate at heart. I believe that every person deserves a strong advocate, regardless of the strength of their case.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My genuine interest in and compassion for people, combined with a strong communications background contributes to my success as an attorney.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I grew up in Miami, which has a large immigrant community. I learned at an early age how many immigrants suffered before coming to the U.S. and also witnessed inequitable treatment of immigrants after they arrived to the U.S. This experience inspired my commitment to advocate for the immigrant community.

What do you like best about your career?

The people I meet, of course! I enjoy the diversity of my clients and the many wonderful things I have learned from them.

Tell us about your law firm:

I am actively involved in all of my cases. I prepare or review all of the work myself and communicate directly with my clients. I also utilize technology to speed up the processing times. I can email clients their paperwork and we can collaborate online, saving days and even weeks of processing time. I am a solo practitioner working in a suite with five other solo immigration practitioners. We have the benefit of shared legal minds and experiences with the flexibility of having our own practices.

What are your strengths and style?

I am a Certified Specialist in Immigration Law. I work hard for my clients and ensure that I am prepared, the case is prepared and most importantly, the clients are prepared. I also utilize creative theories in my practice.

I have a direct, friendly and efficient style. I believe that my clients should be informed about and involved with their cases. I work with my clients as a team to present the strongest case possible and zealously advocate their position.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy my family, music and outdoor activities such as hiking and rock climbing.
