What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

It helps when consumers understand the law and the public policies that underlie the laws.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am very willing to review documents prepared by clients; this is one of the best ways a litigant can spend one's budget for attorney's fees.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am very willing to coach a party/litigant who wants to represent him or her self.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

To make life for children more sensible.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Before deciding to attend law school, I went through my own divorce and put my first husband through law school. I grew up with marital conflict and family dysfunction, so I worked professionally in social services prior to deciding to go to law school.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I think the things I watched my aunt and my mother go through while I was still a child propelled me to go into Family Law and Juvenile Law.

What do you like best about your career?

The law is constantly changing in Family Law; it is never boring and I learn all the time. I learn from clients, as well as other attorneys and from research/articles/etc. I never feel like I have learned it "all." But probably the most rewarding part of Family Law is when I feel like I have helped somebody move through their divorce and see that there really is "life after divorce." It can be an exciting time; an opportunity for a fresh start!

Tell us about your law firm:

I am happy to consult with party/litigants regarding any aspect of their case. The client remains firmly in control; I deal with whatever issues the client requests. I am flexible about traveling to meet with party/litigants wherever they are comfortable meeting.

What are your strengths and style?

My style is low-key and supportive. I like to take a client "as they are" and answer the questions they want answered. If a client is completely off-base, I will tell them that I believe they will be disappointed at court. I tend to be straightforward about my opinions, but I will also explain the basis for my opinion.

Personal Interests:

I love music of most types, sports (my son plays football), bicycling and church. I spend most of my free time involved in volunteer work with the local historical society or choirs. Also, I serve as a Commissioner for the local Parks & Recreation Commission. I am interested in politics and public policy. I love movies and TV, especially as they provide an in-depth look at the ways people interact and relate to one another. I am a student of human nature and human error.
