What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

The more educated the client is, the better. I emphasize helping the client understand not just what we are doing, but why.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Absolutely, however, depending upon the complexity of the document, it
may not be the most efficient way to proceed.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

Yes.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I liked the intellectual challenge and the opportunity to do a great variety of things.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Prior to becoming a lawyer, I worked only in manual labor jobs: restaurants, painting houses, and ranching, to give a few examples. I understand how to communicate with a wide range of people, regardless of their educational or cultural background. My education at one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country (Davidson College) and one of the top 10 law schools in the country (University of Virginia) provided me with the tools to compete with any attorneys, big firm or small.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I like dealing with small business owners - assisting them with decisions that help their businesses grow and prosper. It is much more meaningful to me to help a small business person achieve their goals than to help a large public company hit their quarterly earnings number.

What do you like best about your career?

I like learning about new businesses and all the unexpected ways there are to make money and become successful in this world.

Tell us about your law firm:

We have about a dozen attorneys, all of whom specialize in business related legal areas. Most of the attorneys have 20 years or more experience and handle their own workload. You will not have an inexperienced attorney learning their craft on your account. We have a very experienced staff of legal assistants and secretaries to assist when appropriate.

What are your strengths and style?

I have particular strength and expertise in the area of mergers and acquisitions, and in non-competition law.

I believe in the Golden Rule. I am straightforward and practice with integrity and common sense.

Personal Interests:

Running and biking. Reading, cooking, and current events.
