Previous Employment Summary

I was the sole proprietor of The Law Office of Helga M. Carson from 1991 to 2007. Prior to starting my own firm, I worked for two years in the area of immigration law for the law firm of Warner, Ng & Freiberg in San Jose, California.

Activities and Awards

Over the years I have served in a number of capacities with the local chapter of AILA, including twice as the chapter liaison to the Department of Labor and the Employment Development Department. I have also conducted immigration education seminars and have been a guest lecturer at Santa Clara University.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe it is extremely important for clients to be educated about the immigration process. In our firm we are happy to spend as much time as necessary to educate our clients on legal issues and procedures. We welcome self-education, but caution clients to always check the source of the information they gather, particularly any source on the internet.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

For malpractice reasons, I cannot review documents prepared by clients, but I am happy to answer their general questions in a consultation.

For malpractice reasons, I do not coach clients who want to represent themselves, but I am happy to answer their questions in a consultation.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I decided to become a lawyer so that I could assist others in solving problems and resolving disputes.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My 18 years of experience in keeping up with the ever-changing immigration laws and providing for the varied needs of my clients has made me a better lawyer.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I chose immigration law because I enjoy working with people from all over the world. My clients are hard working individuals and companies that are helping our economy and society to grow and prosper, and it is rewarding to help them attain their goals.

What do you like best about your career?

I enjoy helping people attain their immigration goals.

Tell us about your law firm:

We have seventeen talented and dedicated individuals in the firm: seven attorneys, seven paralegals, and three support staff.

What are your strengths and style?

I have always had an interest in foreign cultures and countries. I have traveled extensively, and my undergraduate education was in International Relations. This background, combined with my many years of experience in immigration law, helps me to better understand my clients and assist them in finding the best immigration strategies to meet their needs.

I am customer service oriented, and enjoy interacting with and educating clients. I also enjoy the challenge of providing the best legal service possible at a reasonable cost and in an efficient manner.

I enjoy spending time with my family, travel, soccer, and tennis.

Hourly Rates

$350.

Free Initial Consultation?

We charge $200 per hour, with a minimum of $100. If we then proceed with a case, we credit the consultation fee towards the fee for that case.

Typical Retainer

$400 - $1,000.
