Example Cases

Although I have represented clients charged with petty thefts to homicide, one of the most interesting and challenging was the case of People v. Jamerson . My client was charged with making a false complaint against a California Highway Patrol officer. I joined with the ACLU to fight the case on Constitutional grounds. Eventually, after four years of litigation, my client was acquitted and the statute under which she was charged was declared unconstitutional.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I encourage clients to seek and gain an understanding of the intricacies of the criminal justice system. It is essential that clients educate themselves about the charges the face, possible punishments, and the criminal justice system process.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I consider any materials provided by my clients and encourage client participation in the case.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

No.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

It is very simple; so much of our lives are affected by the laws that govern society. I believed the best way to have "a say" in such matters was to enter the field of law.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Having had a career prior to law (I am a former chef) and having a family (wife and two sons) has helped me understand and relate to law from the perspective of the "lay" person.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Criminal defense is an area of law that is much closer to people and their everyday lives. It gives me a chance to help people in real need; it is quick, fast-paced and challenging on a day to day basis.

What do you like best about your career?

There are times when as a result of my work someone's life is drastically changed for the better.

Tell us about your law firm:

My law partner and I have been practicing together for approximately 19 years. We also employ a legal secretary and a legal assistant to help coordinate our caseload.

What are your strengths and style?

Understanding and relating to clients; trial work.

I am honest and hard working, but easy going.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy travel, skiing, sailing, photography and reading.
