Continuing Education

In addition to attending elder abuse and trial advocacy courses, well in excess of the state minimums, I teach trial advocacy and elder abuse law to attorneys and other interested persons and organizations several times a year.

Papers and Publications

I am the author of numerous published articles, papers and lectures on the topics of trial advocacy and elder and dependent adult abuse.

Example Cases

In early 2006, I spent 3 months in trial against Sutter General Hospital, Sutter Roseville Medical Center and Dr. James Lett. The jury reached a seven figure verdict and found each of the defendants guilty of elder abuse and fraud, malice or oppression. The jury was instructed to return in two weeks to decide the punitive damages phase of the trial, and during that time the defendants came back to the table in earnest. The case was settled for my wonderful clients.

Firm Focus and History

My practice began with a large Sacramento firm in 1988. I was fortunate to be mentored by two fine trial attorneys. My practice for the first few years was limited to business litigation. Then in 1994, my great aunt Dorothy Palmer was abused in a board and care facility in Marin County, an experience with changed my life and my practice and I found my true calling. Since then, I have advocated on behalf of our elders and dependent adults through lobbying efforts on a state and federal level, with education and litigation.

Previous Employment Summary

Greve Clifford Diepenbrock & Paras 1988-1992; Grossfeld, Dougherty & Grossfeld, 1993; Clement & Associates, 1994 to present.

Activities and Awards

I am a board member of the Foundation Aiding the Elderly, a member of the Leadership Circle of the National Citizen's Coalition for Nursing Home Reform, and I am also on the board of the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I believe that my clients cannot be too educated about their rights in the hospital and in long term care facilities.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Very.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I do not think it is feasible for frail elders or their families to represent themselves against the health care industry.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

To be of service to others.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

The continuing experience of litigating these cases, and ongoing education on health care issues and trial advocacy.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I chose this area of practice after my great aunt was abused in a board and care facility in 1994.

What do you like best about your career?

I love my clients and knowing that our work is increasing public awareness of elder and dependent adult abuse and problems in long term care for patients, families and employees.

Tell us about your law firm:

We have a dedicated team of advocates who are well versed in this area of law and are always willing to be supportive of the victims of elderly abuse and their families.

What are your strengths and style?

I am always prepared. I have reviewed, consulted on and litigated more than three hundred abuse cases.

Polite, but firm.

Personal Interests:

Gardening, theater, reading, and my family.
