What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Clients should become as generally familiar with the laws as they can; they should more particularly be familiar as best they can with the legal issues they're currently dealing with. They must, however, be very careful not to assume that the legal knowledge they have is accurate or complete. Ideally, clients should get as much information as they can as a vehicle to use my more expert services.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Yes, often.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I do help those who need to represent themselves, but in a limited scope and cautious manner.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I was taken by a famous judge's observation that lawyers became lawyers because they didn't know what else to do. Also, my grandfather was a lawyer.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

The experience of wandering around the earth...hitchhiking the world...has made me a more observant person in general. My professional experience also helps me.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

It was a natural evolution, as I was already engaging in trial work and injury work.

What do you like best about your career?

I like best helping people and that I'm still able to be successful helping people.

Tell us about your law firm:

My firm consists of myself, Richard Sly, my loyal and long-suffering secretary, Fran Slossar, and my newest secretary Amanda Hall, who has been helping Fran to not as much. We practice primarily a Social Security Disability practice. We are located in Portland, Oregon, and represent Social Security disability clients in Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington before the Social Security Administration, their Office of Hearings and Appeals, the Appeals Council and the United States Courts.

I additionally engage in a Workers' Compensation litigation and hearing practice involving Oregon on the job injuries and occupational diseases.

The cornerstone of any success I may enjoy is hard work, diligence, and the quality relationship which I try to maintain with clients. Clients are treated with respect concerning their needs, goals, and objectives.

My work as an advocate is generally done on a contingency basis, meaning I am paid attorney fees only if I win your case.

What are your strengths and style?

I have the ability to create solutions and improvise (like a jazz musician) during the hearing and litigation process.

I'm improvisational.

Personal Interests:

Jazz and golf.
