Acting as lead counsel, I have represented various plaintiffs and defendants in patent, copyright, trade secrets, and trademark infringement cases. I have successfully obtained or defended Temporary Restraining Orders to seize infringing products, and also Preliminary/Permanent Injunctions. The technologies involved in these cases ranged from simple mechanical products and connector technology to complex high technology products dealing with controllers and computers and video games.

Firm Focus and History

The Patel Law Firm was founded in August 2006. This was when I decided to leave Wang & Patel as the managing partner and start my own firm.

Our skills in intellectual property prosecution and litigation give us a unique edge in effectively meeting clients' needs and expectations. We handle patent infringement analysis and litigation, trademark/copyright prosecution and litigation, U.S. and foreign intellectual property prosecution, and complex business and real estate dispute resolution and litigation. Additionally, 30% of our practice is devoted to business litigation.

Previous Employment Summary

• WANG & PATEL, P.C. - Civil & Intellectual Property Litigation Firm
• CHRISTIE, PARKER & HALE, LLP (approximately 80 lawyers) - Intellectual Property Law Firm
• ARMSTRONG TEASDALE, LLP (approximately 250 attorneys) - Civil & Intellectual Property Law Firm
• THE BUSCH FIRM, P.C. - Transactional Law Firm

Activities and Awards

I have volunteered my time on a pro-bono basis to the Domestic Violence Program sponsored by Los Angeles Superior Court and have helped many battered women in obtaining Temporary Restraining Orders. Additionally, my pro-bono work involved a matter in a highly contested divorce proceeding that addressed critical issues of foreign property ownership and possible fraud allegations against the other spouse.

In another matter, I was involved in overturning a collection judgment entered and recorded after five years based on certain allegedly fraudulent practices.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I always encourage people to be proactive in whatever they do. A great way to start educating themselves on legal issues is to begin with a Nolo Press publication.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I have no problem reviewing documents prepared by clients on simple issues. However, on complex matters, clients can save time, headaches, and legal expenses if lawyers are involved from the outset in drafting documents and comprehensively addressing legal issues.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am always open to helping individuals in their time of need. Therefore, when I am approached by clients who wish to represent themselves, I always advise them to carefully consider the following factors: the complexity of the legal issues involved, the possible consequences of representing themselves, and their overall financial situation. On simple issues, self representation may be possible. But on complex issues, I recommend clients to obtain legal representation.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

My academic background and previous work experience, combined with a genuine passion for the law and for helping people, propelled me towards the legal field.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

I have hands-on experience in the engineering, product design and manufacturing of high technology products.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

The decision to go into Intellectual Property law was obvious, because of my extensive background in engineering, business and technology.

What do you like best about your career?

What I enjoy most about practicing law is the giving aspect-helping people solve their legal problems and providing solutions for them. I also look forward to establishing long term relationships with my clients, and acting as a support system when they need legal help.

Tell us about your law firm:

Everyone at the Firm shares my philosophy that the client always comes first!

Number of Staff in Firm: One attorney, two of-counsel lawyers, one patent agent, one technology specialist, and two law clerks.

What are your strengths and style?

Detail-oriented, meticulous and focused.

I believe in practicing law with a passion. However, what really sets us apart is our primary focus on our clients. We believe in focusing on substantive rather than procedural issues, thereby making legal disputes more economically manageable for our clients.

Personal Interests:

I like to spend any leisure time I have traveling (not for business). However, this is rare because of my growing clientele.
