Real Estate
I would love to help people with contract disputes in the areas of construction, real estate, and commercial litigation. I also draft contracts in those areas. I have a great deal of experience representing clients in construction and design defect litigation, unlawful detainer actions, as well as real estate fraud and insurance bad faith litigation. Although I am located in Oakland, California, I have helped clients all over the Bay Area and nationally.
Business Law
I enjoy assisting clients in drafting contracts of all kinds, including construction and real estate contracts, leases and representing clients in breach of contract litigation, fraud, and other business issues. I also give business and real estate advice.

The primary focus of my firm is real estate, construction and commercial litigation.
I have helped clients resolve contract disputes of all kinds, either through negotiation, arbitration, mediation, or litigation in the courts. Construction disputes, breach of contract and construction defect issues particularly appeal to me and I have been very successful with them. Finally, I have a great deal of experience in Unlawful Detainer litigation.
Clerk, U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit; Brown McCutchen Law Offices (formerly McCutchen Doyle Brown and Enersen); Miller, Starr and Regalia; Executive Director and General Counsel, Alameda County Bar Association
Judge Pro Tem for Alameda County Superior Court; Highest AV-rating by Martindale-Hubbell; Former Executive Director of Volunteer Legal Services Corporation of the Alameda County Bar Association.
I think self-education on the part of clients is an excellent idea. However, my role is to build upon their knowledge and help when they come to the limit of that knowledge. I will educate the client, but the client must ultimately trust my judgment and skill. I welcome input and questions at any stage of the case.
I am willing to review simple documents prepared by clients. If the issues are more complicated, I will have to prepare the document myself. I will not take responsibility for documents drafted by clients, even if I review them. This is fraught with malpractice dangers.
I am not willing to do so, other than in small claims court. However, the small claims procedures forbid a litigant from being represented by an attorney in court. I will discuss a small claims case in my office. The client will have to represent himself in court.
I decided to become a lawyer because I wanted to advocate on behalf of individuals and organizations and help them resolve their problems.
I know that the teaching experience I had prior to becoming a lawyer helped me to be able to explain the law and its impact on individual client situations. I also know that my legal training and job experience was excellent. Finally, my educational emphasis on foreign languages and cultures in my undergraduate education allows me to represent the diverse cultures of the Bay Area.
I chose my primary practice/specialty because I find real estate and construction law issues fascinating and rewarding.
I enjoy my career because it gives me an opportunity to keep abreast of extremely interesting legal issues and serve the diverse community in which I practice.
I am a solo practitioner, so all of my clients deal directly with me. I have a wonderful, intelligent receptionist and assistant who is very helpful and personable to clients. Her name is Beulah Thompson.
I am very hands-on and listen well. A client's take on the case is the starting point for my representation. Clients today are very sophisticated. I enjoy building upon their knowledge.
