What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

The more educated the better. I recommend "Patent Yourself" to many inventors. It helps them follow what we are doing.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Depends on the documents. Licenses and contracts can be prepared by clients. Clients should not bother trying to write a patent application if they are serious about patent protection. Just answer three questions for me: What is it? How do you build it? How do you use it? It takes less time to write a patent from this point than it does to distill the invention from a draft. Sooner or later, a successful client will have to shift his or her focus to invention and research and development.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

It depends on the sophistication of the client. Most of our clients are too busy building the business, and self-representation takes a lot of time. Sometimes clients hire us when they get overwhelmed. For those that can handle it, both parties need to be clear as to who is responsible for meeting the various deadlines.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I became an attorney mostly to be able to help people and do challenging work. Intellectual property law is a great way to do that.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My experience in the military. As a nuclear engineer, I think I took apart and reassembled every device ever invented. Also, the last fifteen years and nearly one thousand patents filed gives us good insights into what works and what doesn't at the USPTO.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Clients in this area are more fun to work with.

What do you like best about your career?

I like helping creative people create. It is a thrill to see products in Time magazine that we have patented, or to meet a person whose life was saved with a medical device we patented.

Tell us about your law firm:

Paul Backofen and Susan Crockett are both former rocket scientists (JPL and General Dynamics, respectively) with electrical engineering degrees. Niky Syrengelas is a civil engineer.

What are your strengths and style?

A broad technical background from my days as a nuclear engineer, Creativity in finding solutions to challenges. I think in the box to accomplish the nuts and bolts and out of the box to solve the unique challenges of each client.

I don't have a style. I might be talkative. In my patent drafting, I try to be modern and direct.

Personal Interests:

Squash, reading, travel, and hiking.
