Criminal Defense

Preferred New Clients

My preference is to work with first time offenders. I understand that bad things happen to good people and just because a person is charged with a crime, it does not make the person a criminal. It is my job to alleviate my client's stress and fight diligently for a positive outcome. I also enjoy doing vehicle related cases such as speeding tickets, negligent driving, street racing, reckless driving, and attempting to elude police officers. I build my own race cars and cut them loose on the track to vent some steam on the weekends. Hence, I can understand and relate to my fellow lead-footed brethren.

Firm Focus and History

My firm opened in August of 2005 and since then I have worked closely with the Law Office of Willie J. Gregory II. Both Willie Gregory and I focus our practices on Criminal Defense.

Previous Employment Summary

I started off in 2002 as a Certified Legal Intern in Jacksonville with the Civil Law Clinic, directed by Michael Jorgensen. My focus of practice was in estate planning and family law. I started doing criminal defense as a contract attorney in Washington. I started off by covering hearings for other attorneys and eventually taking on cases of my own. In addition to criminal defense, I am the corporate legal counsel for a U.S. based company, a Canadian based company, and a Taiwanese based company. All of these companies conduct businesses related to international trade or services.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

Clients should always be as educated as possible regarding their legal issues. However, three hours of internet research will never be able to compare to the years of training attorneys have. Clients should be cautious as to how they are educating themselves on legal issues. The law is complicated and the consequences of mistakes made as a result of incorrect legal research will often cause irreparable damages to the client. Therefore, it will behoove all clients to consult an attorney to be certain as to what their rights, choices, and their respective consequences are.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am willing to review documents prepared by clients. I provide document review as a free service for my pre-existing and repeat clients. I think clients should have the safety net of knowing that their attorney is there to protect them.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I am willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves on minor civil issues and on some infraction cases. Anything beyond that, I highly encourage my clients to hire legal representation.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I had an interesting childhood and a few very rebellious teenage years. It amazed me as to how the citizen's rights are violated whenever there are interactions with law enforcement personnel. Many of my childhood friends were such victims. My friends were not bad people, they were young and they made mistakes. Now, they have to suffer eternally the consequences of their past misjudgments. I became an attorney so I can prevent the injustice that happened to my friends (which could have happened to me as well) from happening to my clients.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

The L.L.M. in Taxation was the most intense program I have ever been in. Although tax law has little to do with criminal defense, the tax program made me strong. The tax program tests a person's intelligence, efficiency, critical thinking, knowledge assimilation, and above all, composure under pressure. The tax program pushed me to my intellectual and physical limits. It tempered me into a blade of incomparable strength and sharpness. This training has proven its worth several times in the past two years.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

What do you like best about your career?

What I like best about my career is working with different people everyday; acting as the Champions of their Constitutional Rights. Every case that comes in is like a snowflake... unique unto its own. Hence, everyday is a new challenge and everyday is an adventure.

Tell us about your law firm:

I have many contracted attorneys who work with me. We find that when you have different people looking at the same facts, you will usually get several different interpretations. Different interpretations result in different tactics and different possibilities. The attorneys whom I work with range from fresh out of law school to 25+ years of experience. My firm is a synthesis of experience and innovation.

What are your strengths and style?

My strength is my faith in my clients. I believe in my clients and I fight for their cause. How can I convince the jury to believe in my clients if I do not believe in them myself? Additionally, I can think outside of the box and I am not afraid to go to trial. Every case is unique and every client is important to me. I will not take on cases unless I know I can give my clients the time and attention they deserve.

My style is assertive, yet non-confrontational. I believe in the adversarial system where I must represent my client zealously. However, zealous representation does not mean belittling or acting hostile towards the opposing counsel. I will pay the opposing counsel their due respect, yet fight them relentlessly.

Personal Interests:

I enjoy Martial Arts and racing cars. There is just something about blasting down the straight away with my heart on fire that makes it... therapeutic. I build and race cars. Next year, I will be entering my car into local car show competitions such as Hot Import Nights.
