Papers and Publications

Example Cases

Most of my cases are divorces in which I mediate all child related and financial issues. Some of my clients come with a high degree of anger and much conflict, others have a more amiable and cooperative relationship and seek legal clarification and help resolving a few remaining difficult issue. At the end of the process I prepare a written settlement agreement and, if clients wish, all the legal forms required by the court. While for some people it only takes 1-2 sessions to reach full agreement, many of my clients take 3-5 sessions to resolve all issues.

Firm Focus and History

I focus on family law. I established my Mediation and Law Office in Kensington in 1993 and moved my practice to Albany in 2006.

Previous Employment Summary

From 1981-1985, I worked as a legal aid attorney in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and served as directing attorney for the Micronesian Legal Services Corporation in Truk, Federated States of Micronesia in the Pacific. I then worked for Lyon & Beverly, a small firm in Kensington, focusing on family law litigation, until I started my own office in 1993.

Activities and Awards

I have a passion for human rights and have volunteered thousands of hours over the years for the cause of Tibet. As president of the International Committee of Lawyers for Tibet, I advised and assisted the Tibetan Government in Exile, headed by the Dalai Lama, on issues ranging from autonomy, democracy building in exile to political advocacy at the United Nations and many other international fora.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I enjoy working with informed clients. The more informed a client is, the better prepared s/he is likely to be for mediation and for sound decision making. I review relevant law, from a neutral perspective, in the mediation process. When clients already have an understanding of the law, I focus on the finer points and often help the two sides clarify different understandings they reached through their research.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I am glad to review documents.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

While my practice focuses on mediation, I also consult with clients who are in mediation with someone else or who seek an understanding of their legal rights and obligations.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I was interested in social justice and wanted to understand the systems and rules that govern our lives.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

25 years of legal and mediation practice and my background in psychology have helped me to become a compassionate and efficient mediator.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

During my many years as an attorney representing clients in court, I saw how harmful the legal system can be to families. I wanted to find a way to help people avoid the polarization and huge costs involved in litigation. As a family law mediator, I feel, I have become a part of the solution, rather than the problem.

What do you like best about your career?

People often enter the process very angry and in despair and leave feeling relieved and more ready for their future path. To be a part of that transformation is one of the most gratifying aspects of my work. I also very much enjoy assisting families reach cooperative co-parenting agreements.

What are your strengths and style?

I am a focused person and brings both a compassionate heart and helpful structure to the process. I am very able to hold and honor opposing views and feelings and to tolerate differences. I believe my strengths lie in my understanding of people's emotional realities and in my focus on resolving the practical aspects of their disputes.

I have a practical approach which focuses on the future, not the past. While I honor my clients' feelings and make room for emotions in the process, I tend to structure mediation sessions around the practical aspects of the dispute, in a dissolution for example, the property division, care of the children and support. On each issue, I look for ways to bring together the essential needs expressed by both parties. I work on keeping the discussion focused and thus keep the number of sessions to a minimum.

Personal Interests:

I love being with my young son and family, being in nature, hiking and gardening and doing international human rights work.
