Continuing Education

I complete my mandated continuing education every year. In April of 2006, I gave a seminar to judges, commissioners, and information and assistants persons in the workers' compensation community on the AMA guide, 5th addition regarding impairments (permanent disability) and how it can benefit injured workers.

Example Cases

I was able to apply the AMA guides as it relates to medical issues to an old scheduled case to take the case into a life pension.

I have applied the AMA guides to new scheduled cases to get monetary results that are equal to old scheduled cases on back injuries.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I think clients should inform themselves of the legal issues in their case. However, the discussion with the legal issues should be with their lawyer and the lawyer should represent the injured workers.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

Of course.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

No.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I decided to be a lawyer so that I could help people.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My personal work experience as a working person doing heavy manual labor has helped me to relate to my clients. As a teenager, I worked in Alaska in a cold storage plant processing fish. I have done warehouse work and I have done retail sales.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

A friend of mine introduced me to workers' compensation and I found that I immediately adapted to it because I had empathy for my clients based on my personal background.

What do you like best about your career?

What I like best about my career is when people send me a thank you note after I settle a case. I also enjoy the respect of the workers' compensation community that I have earned.

Tell us about your law firm:

My philosophy regarding clients is that they have total access to me. Communication is key. I have a policy that if a client wants an appointment, they get that appointment, and I always return their phone calls.

What are your strengths and style?

My unique strength and expertise is my ability to create a working relationship with the people who represent the insurance companies. I work with people and not against them to reach a common goal.

My style is that I am "to the point." My goal is to expedite my client's claim.

Personal Interests:

My personal interests include my family, golf, physical fitness, and health.
