Ames IP Law is a law firm focusing on intellectual property and related matters. I established the firm following more than 10 years of major law firm experience assisting clients with their intellectual property legal needs. The firm emphasizes close interaction with our clients using carefully designed strategies to optimize the value of the resulting patent portfolios. We seek to provide highly cost effective legal services by offering a high level of experience, moderate rates, and carefully controlled costs, thereby allowing our clients to limit their expenditures for intellectual property counsel while maximizing the value obtained.
At the same time, we emphasize careful attention to the preparation of patent specifications. To help accomplish this, we recommend close interaction with clients to ensure understanding of each invention so that the resulting application properly describes and claims the invention.
I began my career with the intellectual property law firm of Lyon & Lyon as a law clerk while attending the University of San Diego School of Law (USD), and continued as an associate after becoming an attorney. Subsequently, I worked at the law firms of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison and Foley & Lardner, focusing my practice on providing intellectual property services. My work has included strategic counseling, patent preparation and prosecution, opinion preparation, assisting with litigation, and transactional work.

I find it very beneficial for clients to educate themselves on the legal issues affecting their matters. In order to assist them, I often emphasize discussions of the issues and options.
I am happy to review documents prepared by a client. Usually it is helpful if we discuss document preparation ahead of time in order to make the document preparation and review process most effective.
I will assist clients who are experienced enough to recognize issues in their case to represent themselves.
Based on my experiences in academic research, I became interested in the patent process. Eventually I decided to become a lawyer and use my science background in patent law.
The varied experiences in my background, from working in major law firms, through academic and industry laboratory work, and back through growing up on a farm, have exposed me to a broad range of technologies. This allows me to readily grasp a broad range of inventions so that I can provide effective and efficient assistance to inventors and companies.
I chose intellectual property law, and particularly patent law, because it allowed me to continue to use my background in science.
I enjoy the process of assisting individuals and developing companies in protecting their inventions as a tool to accomplish their goals.
I recently established Ames IP Law after working in major law firms for 10 years. With this background, Ames IP Law offers highly experienced counsel who can work with clients in a flexible manner, at reduced cost, to provide effective and efficient assistance on intellectual property matters.
My work and education experiences allow me to address a wide range of technologies and to understand the perspectives and needs of clients, whether as individual inventors, start-up or developed companies, or university researchers. This is enhanced by my experiences in both patent prosecution and in patent litigation, which helps me to address both the short term and long term needs of clients.
I prefer a relaxed, interactive relationship with my clients, as I find that this is beneficial in maximizing communications and in accomplishing my client's goals.
I currently spend time with my children, especially in their sports activities, and I am completing construction of my home.
