Continuing Education

Although 45 continuing education hours are required by the WSBA over every three year period, I have completed over 125 hours of continuing education in collaborative law and mediation/conflict resolution related trainings since 2005.

Papers and Publications

I am not an author or editor. However, I have developed trainings, workshops and continuing education presentations pertaining to collaborative law and for mediation skills for collaborative professionals.

Example Cases

I recently completed a collaborative divorce involving parties that were married 25 years, with a net marital estate of several million dollars including several complicated financial assets. This was combined with parenting issues for two teenage children and involved long-term spousal support.

I also recently completed a collaborative divorce involving parties after a 12 year marriage, where the parties had two young children with whom they each wanted to have significant involvement, and where limited assets and incomes posed a challenge to obtain financial security for both parties living separately.

Firm Focus and History

My firm's focus has always been to provide client-centered representation that not only educates the client about the legal and financial aspects of their divorce, but also seeks to address their emotional needs and psychological well-being by making the appropriate referrals to qualified allied professionals and providing a supporting, empathetic, and respectful environment for them through the hard work of their transition. Furthermore, I have always emphasized conflict reduction and resolution in my practice as opposed to protracted litigation and avoid methods which tend to escalate conflict between parties.

Previous Employment Summary

Prior to expanding my firm in 2003 to include associate attorneys, I have been either a solo practitioner or an associate member of a law firm practicing solely in the area of family law since 1992.

Activities and Awards

Since 2005, I have been a partner, trainer, and developer of course materials for the Institute for Advanced Dispute Resolution, a Boulder, Colorado based, mediation focused academic institute. I have also given numerous presentations on all aspects of family law to adult continuing education classes, as well has provided trainings and workshops to family attorneys involved in collaborative law.

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

I fully appreciate clients who have taken the time to educate themselves about the various processes available to them for handling and resolving their legal issues, as long as that education comes from reputable sources such as legitimate publications, consultation with trained professionals in related fields, and adult-education based opportunities such as seminars and classes, and not from well-meaning yet emotion-based sources such as family and friends, or fiction-based sources such as popular entertainment mediums. I also appreciate a client who is willing to "do homework" and tap into outside resources when suggested, so as to benefit not only our working relationship during a case, but also to learn new methods for coping with future conflict when our professional relationship has concluded. I also strongly encourage clients with children to learn all they can about the growth, development, and emotional needs of their children as they are affected in the divorce process.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?

I have always made myself available on a consultation basis for those who prefer to do their own work and assist wherever I can within the parameters of the requested involvement of an attorney.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

I have always enjoyed the coaching aspect of assisting a client with self-representation and make myself available on a consultation basis for those requesting those services.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I did not decide to become a lawyer until my late 20's after researching different post-graduate programs. I had been working as a family law paralegal after completion of my college degree and enjoyed not only the ability to connect with clients, but also valued the intellectual aspect of the legal profession. My undergraduate studies had emphasized social services and counseling and becoming a lawyer would allow me to continue the one-on-one, client-centered aspect of a "helping profession" while continuing to challenge my intellect in a profession with unlimited opportunities for personal and professional growth.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

My day-to-day interactions with clients, other parties and counsel always gives me something new to ponder in my study of conflict theory! My frequent attendance at family law-related regional and national conferences, along with frequent trainings pertaining to collaborative family law, challenge me to keep up to date with the latest trends and information in my field. Not only do I strive to then share this information with my clients, I also attempt to motivate and inspire my professional colleagues by sharing with them what I've learned.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

I chose family law because of the interaction it provides for me with clients on a "day-to-day" basis and the opportunity it affords me to help individuals and families define a new family structure for themselves through the sharing of the my skills, education and training.

What do you like best about your career?

Above all, the thing I like most about my career is being able to share in a client's personal transformation after successfully assisting them with navigating all of the challenges of their separation or divorce.

Tell us about your law firm:

Thomas Gross: Office Manager Tom is my husband and has been my office manager since 1998, after retiring with the rank of Colonel from the U.S. Air Force. He handles the financial aspects of a client's representation (payments of fees, invoicing, etc.) as well as provides the initial screening and intake for prospective new clients. Clients describe him as very empathetic, a great listener, and a wealth of information regarding the practical aspects of their situation.

Amanda Cook: Associate Attorney Amanda has been with my firm since the beginning of 2006 and handles all areas of family law. She is a regular volunteer with a local legal services clinic. Amanda's husband is also a family law attorney and she is the mother of two young boys, which probably explains her very caring and protective nature toward her clients!

Rachel Cloud: Receptionist/Legal Secretary: Rachel is the cheerful voice answering the phone, as well as the extremely efficient person who manages our calendars, files, and completes miscellaneous secretarial duties.

What are your strengths and style?

My expertise is Collaborative Divorce and Mediation. My unique strength is being able to help parties understand the nature of their conflict while sorting out their legal issues and assisting them with creating a new kind of relationship with the other party that will hopefully benefit themselves, their children, and extended families in the future.

My style is purely non-adversarial. I constantly remind clients to seek understanding and peaceful resolution.

Personal Interests:

My personal interests include gardening, reading memoirs and biographies, gourmet cooking, and travel.
