None at this time, the only "papers" are those regarding the cases I am handling.
People vs. Lam, 1st degree murder, not guilty verdict on all counts including lesser allegations.
People vs. Butler, kidnapping for robbery (mandatory life sentence), obtained a non-holding order at conclusion of preliminary hearing.
People vs. Hall, three counts of bank robbery, two counts of being a member of a gang and possession of a gun, two counts assault with a deadly weapon, one count attempted murder on a peace officer, and an enhancement for assisting a criminal street gang. Prior to trial attempted murder on a peace officer was dismissed by motion I made. After first trial jury acquitted on two counts of bank robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and being a member of a street gang. After trial court granted motion to dismiss allegation of being a gang member in possession of a gun.

I handle primarily serious felony cases. I do some Sexually Violent Predator matters and a bit of Personal Injury. I have been in solo practice since May, 1992, in San Joaquin County.
Left Active service with United States Air Force in 1981 to begin law school, was USAF reserves until 1992 and retied as Major: Self employed as attorney 1985 to 1987, Public Defender 1987 to 1989: Private practice with other firms until 1992
The profession is full time and then some. My activities, other than continuing education, away from the office are not law related and are intended to provide much needed rest.
It depends on the nature of the "education." If clients are "educating themselves" by reading materials provided by the jails law library I find that the client is generally reading material that is out of date. I have no objection to providing a client with copies of or directions on how to obtain current relevant material.
This is extremely rare in the field of criminal law. The exception would be where a client is actually representing his/her self and has retained the office in a specifically limited manner. If the allegations in a criminal matter are serious, the client does not prepare any documents.
My willingness to "coach" a client in a criminal matter depends on the nature of the allegations.
It is a noble profession the purpose of which is to assist those in difficulty.
Criminal law is not just about what the facts are and what law or laws may b applied to those facts. In many instances, the interaction of various personalities and underlying public policies need to be considered. It is experience in practice and discussions with colleagues which provides this "assistance".
Unlike real estate or probate, you are dealing with a live person.
I like winning a difficult case after which the client hugs you and says thank you.
I am a sole practitioner. My practice is limited to criminal matters, and selected personal injury cases with significant injury.
My strength is flexibility and a realization that one needs to think creatively.
My style is flexible, creative, and "easy going", unless I need to take a harder line.
I have been told that my BBQ ribs are pretty good and so is my slaw and Southern corn bread.

I offer a free initial consultation on a case by case basis. Consultations are $250 to $500.
I usually split the retainer. For misdemeanors the cost is usually $1250 through the pretrial conference, including any motions. Trial fees are $3000 plus. For Felony matters, the cost is usually $2500 through preliminary hearing. Trial fees vary depending on the nature of the charges and the estimated time required for trial. (A typical drug possession case would probably be in the approximate amount of $2000 but may increase if there are unique issues such as prior convictions, especially "strikes". The fees for a murder case could be substantial.) Fees are for attorney services and do not include the cost of expert witnesses, investigators or the cost of obtaining discovery.
Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
