Criminal Defense
I prefer clients that are prepared to be truthful with me, regardless of what their statement may be. Whether a client is completely innocent, partially innocent, or not in fact innocent of the charges, I particularly like knowing the truth from the outset so that tactics may be formulated at the inception of representation.

In addition to continuing legal education classes in all areas of criminal defense and trial practice, I have taught such courses within all aspects of the criminal justice system. Education seminars I have taught include those to judges through the Judicial Council of California, Administrative Offices of the Court; criminal defense attorneys through the National Child Abuse Defense and Resource Center, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and California Continuing Education of the Bar. On multiple occasions I have also instructed law enforcement detectives seeking certification as sex abuse detectives by the Peace Offers Standards and Training Agency and Physicians in Training for Forensic Psychiatry Certification through the University of California, Davis, Medical Center. Trial practice seminars I have taught include those for the Sacramento County Public Defenders, Yolo County Public Defender, Lorman Educational Services and the Sacramento County Indigent Criminal Defense Panel.

Eight years as a Deputy Public Defender in Los Angeles County
Private Practice in Sacramento since 1979
I am a Past President of California Attorneys for Criminal Justice. I regularly give lectures on trial skills to the National Child Abuse Defense and Resource Center and have served both as trainer and program director of the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice Trial Skills Workshop at Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California. In addition, I have taught trial skill seminars to the organization previously known as the California Trial Lawyers Association and on behalf of CEB - California Continuing Education of the Bar. Further, I have presented to California trial judges through the continuing education program of the California Judicial Council.
A well-prepared and fully educated client is frequently my greatest asset. All my clients are clearly instructed from the inception of their case that their comments and suggestions are always welcome. Cases have been won based upon the suggestion of clients. The name of the game is to "win", regardless of whether the winning suggestion was thought of by the client, our office investigator, or myself.
Yes - clearly.
No, I am not willing to coach clients that want to represent themselves.
I like working with people and personally enjoy the challenge of resolving difficult and complex factual situations.
Over thirty years of defending people in difficult legal situations, in many cases working with mental health professionals in order to obtain equitable results.
I like happy endings.
I like happy endings.
All seven attorneys in our office practice criminal defense. Four of us, including myself, are listed in the California Super Lawyers publication, and three, including myself, are listed in the publication Best Lawyers in America. I have been so-honored since the inception of that publication ten years ago. Our office's private investigator has over twenty years of experience and works exclusively for our clients.
Virtually every rating service which reviews attorneys has consistently has found our firm to be preeminent. I believe that our success, in large part, is due to the sharing of ideas and tactical questions with regard to difficult cases, utilizing the talents of all attorneys within the firm. Frequently, that never appears upon the client's bill.
I like to believe that I am well-regarded by all judges I have appeared before in Sacramento and surrounding counties. When prosecutors see me walk into a room, they know that they have a battle on their hands.
I speak softly but carry a large stick.
I enjoy hiking at great elevations - Himalayas, Andes, Alps, Rockies and Sierras; skiing at high speeds.

I charge every case the same way - a deposit to trust, a minimum number of hours guaranteed for my work, and then clients by the hour. I do not offer a fixed price for services and fees.

A reasonable initial consultation is provided at no charge.
There is not such thing as a "typical retainer". We do not have a typical "retainer" but require that clients deposit funds, in advance, to our clients' trust accounts to be billed against an hourly rate or daily rate. In serious felonies, that ranges between $7,500 and $25,000.
Attorneys have passed a licensing check. Nolo has confirmed that every member attorney has a valid license and is in good standing with the applicable bar associations upon joining the directory.
Directory lawyers are required to notify Nolo immediately if they become the subject of any disciplinary action by any bar association.
