I have a successful start-up solo practice established in 1997 in San Francisco.
My favorite experience was two high school years with the New York City Youth Work Development Program at CCNY Kingsborough College. I loved living with my grandparents back in Brooklyn and earning some good money to take to college with hard work.
Since 1997 I have been an instructor for a Private Investigator school in San Francisco, teaching 3-hour courses in Civil Law, Evidence Handling, and Attorney Services for aspiring PIs earning their California license. Teaching helps me to stay on top of legal and current issues because students ask challenging and novel questions; it's a lot of fun!
My opinion is highly positive; the internet is a great resource for the public to educate themselves about the law.
It is very common to review documents for potential and existing clients.
California now allows limited representation in family law courts, recognizing these arrangements are an effective and practical way for a litigant to have an attorney when they may otherwise not be able to hire counsel. It is a welcome change from the past rules prohibiting limited scope work; the new rules make sense and benefit clients.
I realized early that there was an opportunity, not available to others in my family, to have a legal career. My sister is a social worker and we have similar values and goals: to help deserving people
The voluntary bar associations such as BASF, CAOC, ATLA and SFTLA are terrific resources because the members are highly motivated and generous with their time and knowledge. I am proud to be a member of these voluntary bar groups.
I was an auto accident victim and client before I was an attorney. That experience gave me an understanding about a client's emotions, expectations and health concerns that provides a guideline as a lawyer--it helps me relate better having seen it thru a client's eyes. Expanding my practice to family law was a natural next step because advising and counseling plaintiffs translates very well to the needs of divorce, custody, support and domestic violence clients.
The best is knowing that I am true to my convictions. I knew I wanted to be a lawyer since I was very young, and to do it while so much else has changed in life means so much. The feeling of helping a client who trusts you to handle their most personal matters and then obtaining a good result is priceless.
I work in a shared-office building with great attorneys and colleagues. It is a friendly environment for attorneys and clients. Our building is a historic Victorian-converted office which I find to be far more charming than a skyscraper.
Having 10 years experience as a civil litigator is invaluable to practicing in the family law courts. Plaintiff litigation is complex, demanding, and requires superior knowledge of highly technical evidence and procedure rules that equally apply to family court proceedings. Further, civil litigation develops courtroom advocacy and trial skills that distinguish me from other attorneys who are not litigators by training.
I am often told by attorneys and clients that I remind them how "things used to be" when an attorney's reputation for professionalism and honesty were the most important attributes to strive for as a lawyer. Today's society is crueler and more complicated, and it leads to too many attorneys caring more about egos or economic incentives than old fashioned values. On a personal level I am down to earth and approachable, with a strong internal compass.
I have an active and happy life outside of the law. Living in the Bay Area is a blessing, there's no better place to enjoy everything life has to offer.
