Personal Injury
I like to work with people who have been seriously injured by the mistakes of others.

I have completed over 100 hours in trial practice and personal injury law.
1. I tried a case against a major San Francisco hospital in which we proved that hospital staff had been negligent when they left my client alone on a gurney in the hallway of the hospital 3 days after having neck surgery. My client somehow got flipped off the gurney and reinjured her neck in the fall. Her doctors testified that she was not injured and the fall did not cause any injury, despite the fact that she had a second surgery 2 weeks later. The jury found in our favor and awarded an amount more than 10 times the last offer.
2. I settled a case against a trucking firm and a large lumber company for the wrongful death of my client's husband. The lumber company overloaded the truck and the driver of the truck lost his load going around a curve on a mountain road. My client's husband was traveling in the opposite direction. The lumber bounced off the roadway in front of his vehicle and went through his windshield, killing him. The trucking company blamed the accident on my client's husband, but we were able to prove that the trucker went over the double yellow lines and the case settled for a substantial amount.

Although I previously practiced other types of litigation, e.g., construction defect litigation, contract disputes, employment disputes, real estate fraud, and even family law, my practice for the last 10 years has been completely focused on personal injury law.
I worked for Reed, Elliott, Creech & Roth in San Jose as an Associate Attorney from 1987 to 1990 doing general civil litigation, including personal injury work on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants. From 1990 to 1992, I worked at a small Santa Rosa law firm doing real estate and construction-related litigation. In February of 1992, I founded the Law Offices of Julia J. Parranto, in part to get back to personal injury work.
I work as an Arbitrator for the State Bar, for the Superior Court of Sonoma County, and for the Sonoma County Bar Association. I am on the panel of independent arbitrators for Kaiser medical malpractice claims. I am a Director of the Board of the Sonoma County Bar Association. I serve as a Mandatory Settlement Conference panelist for the Sonoma County Courts.
A client who is well-informed tends to be a better client because there is a basic understanding of what needs to be proven in order to succeed in the personal injury claim.
No, I am not willing to review documents prepared by clients.
No, I am not willing to coach clients that want to represent themselves. Sorry, I don't have the time.
I decided to be a lawyer because I wanted to do something worthwhile with my life, and I thought being a trial lawyer would be interesting and fun.
Actually, having worked through college and law school (and having been poor) helps me to relate to my clients better and to better understand what they are going through when they suddenly can't provide for their families or do the housework, etc.
I wanted to have regular people as my clients, not insurance companies, corporations, or even public entities. It amazes me how broad the spectrum of society that my clients come from is: I've had everyone from bank presidents to fire fighters to homeless schizophrenics as my clients.
I like winning a trial or getting a good settlement for a deserving client.
I have two assistants: Kati and Stacy. Kati has been with me for 6 years. She is a trained legal secretary, but functions as a secretary/paralegal. Stacy has been with me for 5 years. She is our receptionist/medical billing guru. Both women are energetic and interested in their work. They both strive to do well by our clients.
My unique strength is my trial experience.
We are extremely thorough in our presentation of even the smallest case. We make reasonable demands so as to maintain credibility with insurance companies. We treat others with dignity and respect and expect the same in return. I will try any case that I've taken if the insurance company's offer is less than what I think it should be - regardless of personal financial risk.
I enjoy my children, traveling, sports (both as a player and a fan), and coin collecting.
